Tegu Potty Training

drykilllogic83 Feb 14, 2004 07:35 PM

In the future, when my tegu gets bigger, I am plaining on letting him roam free around the house. The thing that I am worried about is that he will crap all over the place. I really don't want to be stepping on crap. I have heard that tegus can be potty trained, is this true? And if it is, how could it be done?

Hey,

Well I kind of have my tegu potty-trained. I've gotten her into the habit, or she's just gotten used to, going on walks and then going the bathroom. The only problem is, she now equates going outside of her cage to being a big toilet, so even if she does a #2 outside in the grass, she still may do a small #1s inside the house. I don't know if this is to mark territory or whatever, but I wish I could trust her since I'd love to let her free-roam without the fear of her peeing/pooping around the house. Also, people have said on the forum in the past that putting them in a warm bath will stimulate their bowels, and then they should go the bathroom and be fine for the rest of the day. I've never been able to get her to do her business in the tub, and even if she did, I'm still worried she'd take the occasional pee/poop. Hopefully, judging by the videos, Rollin can answer this one.

That sounds similar to what mine do. After I've been taking them out they don't want to go poop in the cage anymore. I think they somewhat see the area around their cage as part of their home too and are less likely to poop there. After I take them either outside or to the tub to go the bathroom I'm pretty sure they won't go again anytime soon. As they've got older, stopped growing, and eating so much they're better about not pooping twice in one day.

Tegu's crappin in your bath tub? Nasty! A better idea would be to place them in a large rubbermaid with 4in. of warm h20 with a lid over them. ZACK!
