Entertanment center conversion, not completed but they dragons like it

CheriS Feb 15, 2004 12:15 AM

We worked all day on converting this entertainment center into an enclosure for some of the adult girls.

What we have finished:

The enclosure part is 52 wide x 30 high x 20 deep, with a recessed area for their sand pit. We made a hole that is plugged in the bottom of the pit to drain and change the sand. They have shelf liner on the basking and eating area. Also their paper poo towel (they are really good about using this).

The doors are sliding tempered glass on little rollers that work great and don't rattle, with a raised mount so the sand can not get into them. We had a glass shop here make them, much like the sliding glass in a doctors office window to the receptionist. We left an 8 inch open area at the top, above the UVB MV and heat lights so there is air flow and also a screened area in the back.

160 Watt Power Sun keeps the sand temp right at 102(we can raise or lower the light an inch either way, the top of the basking cave in the sand is 110, the heat light(60 watts household bulb) in the middle keeps about 94- 96 and the cool end is 78.

What we still need to do:

Enlarge the holes in the back top for the cords to go through, we made them too small SO they are coming out the front top for now

Paint the wood showing - white and add the loft on the right side, it will have a ramp that goes from the middle area up about 8 inches and that will have their bed area.

We were just too excited to move them in and see how they liked it so far and they seem to be very happy in it, they brighten up in color more than we have seen since summer!

The insert in the lower right of the picture is what it looked like before we started..... total cost to convert....$98

I love the recessed sand pit area. I am trying to figure out how to configure something like that in my cages for Spud and Fuego. Fuego likes to dig, but I hate sand substrate (so hard to clean!!) I haven't had Spud on sand so I don't know if she likes to dig, but I would imagine so. What is the substrate, if you will, on the other side of the sand pit? Is it shelf liner?

It was a thicker shelf liner in 24 inch size we found at walmarts, it seems to clean and hold down better that the others we tried so far and does not stain.

The sand pit is actual the bottom of the entertainment center, we used the divider that was in the middle between the tv and stereo center and mounted it on 2 x 4 on the bottom to create the upper area where the shelf liner is. The other shelf will be the loft.

They have been so busy today and really seem to enjoy it, they all crashed out in the sand last night, it was so cute, we hope to have the platform loft and ramp finished next weekend.

The girls look really happy! You can call it the "Lucky Lizard Ladies Lounge"

I am getting the shelf liner for Spud and Fuego. She is on paper towels right now and he is on the icky sand.

Hi Cheri
I just wanted to show you the before pic I have with my entertainment center. In this pic it is after we gutted out all the shelves and reinforced everything from the bottom to the top. We also put wheels on the bottom to make it easier to move if it has to be. It'll be finished hopefully in the next couple of days cause our new guy should be here by Thursday!

COOL! I made one of mine from an old dresser and a storm window!

Very creative!!!! Looks good- I'm gonna be finishing mine soon- we are making the rock wall then the lights and sliding doors will go in! We are also going to build a basking ledge and right underneath that will be a sand box fully lit. That is if all goes well.
