egg binding signs help!

j0anne Feb 15, 2004 04:13 AM

my water dragon is about 2 years old, and about 4 months ago she became very fat. she gradually stopped eating much, and only accepts one type of insect - mealworms, she eats about 5 of the giant ones once a week or so. she didn't display any digging activities. i gave her a sand box to lay in if she wanted, but she didn't do anything. i've since removed it. right now she's still like she was, no more activity or no less activity than usual. no digging behaviour. but she's FAT!
what other signs of dystocia can i use to diagnose whether she is having eggs or not? or is she just fat? but she eats so little. please help. thank you.

You should be able to feel the eggs in her belly, they feel like jelly beans. If she seems really lethargic or has trouble holding on to a branch she is egg-bound, but when mine hit that point they were too far gone to save. If you suspect a problem, take her to a good reptile vet if you can find one. My vet always told me my dragons would be fine, and they died right afterward.

nope, no jelly bean thingys. i'm not very sure though, but it feels like my other younger dragon's belly. she doesn't have any problem hanging off anything, unless i trimmed her nails. do the eggs feel superficial or do they feel like you must press a bit harder into her belly to feel them?

she doesn't move much...she prefers to lie in her hammock the whole day long. but this was since she reached adulthood.

there are no good reptile vets here.

Your very unlikely to hurt her. the Smooth oval eggs are really easy to feel and become more so when they are egg bound. A fat belly is also a sign of MBD. Other symptoms are twitching and or swollen limbs, rubbery fingers and mouth.
