My boa constrictor eating... ringneck...

regalringneck Feb 15, 2004 07:54 AM

Good to see the interest here in Diadophis.

Im not trying to 1-up the fish eater; this is the 1st time Ive heard of that behavior & I've read the majority of the papers published on this taxon. Diadophis appears to have the greatest dietary range of any serpent in N. America. It also has one of the greatest ecological distributions in terms of its habitat. Its a testimony to their nearly perfect design that they have not radiated into multiple species.... tho I still assert regalis really is its own beast.
Anyway I have a jpg if anyone wants to post it (I'm tired of learning new tricks!)of one of my regalis envenomating & consuming a luckless rock boa I found injured by a car.

Cheers, jg

Interest in Ringneck Snakes? I'm probably one of the only people out there that will actually say they can be good pets.

Yeah Regal Ringnecks are very popular, I just can't get one because the out of the only people I have found to have them, they are all still debating whether or not to classify them as venomous or non-venomous. Stupid argument if you ask me. They have remained at the top of my list for a long time, I'm gonna see if I can find someone in Kansas that can get me one.

I think a division to three species would be more accurate. The Regal, the Northern and the various southern forms.

Though As far as perfection goes and variety of eating habits...You can't beat Your basic King (L. getula). It's perfectly designed for it's niche and will literaly eat anything that looks like food (including one example of HOTDOG injestion!!)

Hotdogs? Can you get me a hotdog eating Kingsnake? Were you kidding about that? Well never-less the Ringneck Snakes in general will eat alot of prey items. I myself have gotten Northerns to eat worms, snakes, salamanders, frogs and pinkie mice. I've gotten Southerns to eat fish(what can I say, I've only had 2). I wanna see a ringneck eating a boa constrictor, I believe it, but I wanna see it as well. Man I wanna get a Regal! Anyone out there have a pic of a baby Regal? I have never seen a pic of one.
