Gravid Spilotes ????

D Goudie Feb 15, 2004 11:52 AM

Hi Guys;
Hi Guys;

since this seems to be the unoffical 'Spilotes p. forum' I was just wondering what to provide for my female before she drops a clutch of eggs, she's been off her normal 2 rats a week for over a month now but is expanding quite largely around the mid-section, that usual triangular shape is turning rounder every day. Right now I have a standard next box lined with dampened spahgnum moss for her. She hasn't went into a shed yet but once she does I'll remove the water dish just so as she won't lay her eggs in there.

Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx
Dean

She may continue to eat, but smaller meals less often. Try a small meal like a few weanling rats dusted w/ calcium to get some nutrition in her. If she refuses, don't worry about it, but it's worth a shot.

The nest box lined in sphagnum is good...but as the time draws near I usually line the ENTIRE CAGE with either damp cypress or peat moss. I only take the water dish out when I'm not home and can't check on them for extended periods.

This way, you really don't have to worry if they decide to lay outside the nest box, at least the eggs will not dry out until you are able to get them.

Good Luck!

Never thought about speading moss all over the cage but I will, I'm down there at least twice a day anyway but with weather outside being -20 degrees celcius the electric heat is making the room dryer anyway. This time of year I always stuff their's & the Indigo's rats with cod liver oil capsules keep's their skin from getting too dry. 1st winter I had an adult Eastern I kept getting this 'Indigo dandruff' but the cod liver oil did the trick.

Will let you know when there's Spilotes eggs appearing..... this is a 1st for me, how many should I expect from an 8 foot female??? I gather the eggs are pretty long & bullet shaped.

Thanx again for the information.
