respiratory infection

chakup Feb 15, 2004 01:54 PM

one of the 2 new beardies i got appears to maybe have a respiratory infection. She breathes really heavy, and it looks like her nose is blocked by some extra skin. Her tongue looked to have a little bit of a yellow tinge to it. any thoughts here?

They can get nasty quickly. I recommend taking her to the vet as soon as you can. The yellow tinge on the tongue is proably normal. Make sure to increase your temperatures in your enclosure and check your humidity to make sure it is not too high. Most respiratory infections are caused by too much humidity. You just adopted/purchased her right? You may want to call where you got her from and see what they have to say.

the tank that they are in is 5'Lx16"Dx25"tall, so it is a big tank to heat. They now have 1)150w flood light and 1)100w household light ove there basking spot and am just now getting the temps right, previous owner wasn't even close. I have seen a great improvement even today with temps up, she isn't struggling to breath so much. I definitely plan on watching closely and going to the vet anyways just for a basic checkup.

You should have it checked by a vet. Since you said they were not kept real clean, there is a high chance they have an overload of them

Both can penetrate through the intestinal lining and get into the liver, block bile ducts and cause a yellow discoloration in tissue.

But whether coccidia, worms or a respiratory infection, with symptoms like that, you need medical care for it, probably both if they were together prior.

Breeding them to your male at this time should not even be an option, they need 3 months quarantine time, especially with their past care and they do not look like they have a real good fat layer down yet either to support being gravid a few times.

I know you also do not want to risk harming your male dragon's health that you have taken good care of by exposing him to them yet.

I was planning on waiting to breed anyways because my male is still a little young. I know a vet check is in order for both and am looking for a good one around me (eugene, OR). The one showing symptoms hasn't eaten all that great yet, the other is a pig.
