cannibalism in Thrasops jacksoni.................

rearfang Feb 15, 2004 02:32 PM

The above says it all. Introduced my six foot male to a slightly larger but not as heavy female. After two hours (observed) returned male to his cage. This was repeated after giving giving a three day rest. The pair was fed and then allowed six days to digest before reintroducing.
This time I was called away and returned an hour later to find the male alone (and definitly heavier) in the cage.
The fun(?) part to this is I saw no reference in the liturature available to me that they would eat snakes...let alone their own species.......Live and learn...........

Experience is always something you have after you need it...

In reference to the above posted loss, it was less final than assumed. I lifted the male out and he looked noticably larger. It seems that he picked this occasion to, for the first time do a full body inflation threat. I have seen such before with Psuestes amongs't other species, but this was a first for this one. He went Indigo sized. I went back into the herp room a few minutes ago and noticed a small box that had been knocked off the shelf. Looking up there was the female staring back down at me...intact...and definitly unconsumed.

The best I can figure is that the last time I put the male in with her he was showing additude, strugling and in fact, bit my shirt. The female must have darted out the other side of the cage and ran along the wall where I could not see her.

Another great example of why an escape proof room like I have is so important....Especially when the snake pulls one over one ya.........

The only article I have on captive breeding of this species, does mention that they eat snakes. I believe the quote is " they ate everything, including Adders". It is a an extract from a German article, published in Litteratura Serpentium. To date I have not been able to trace the full article.

Really glad your female wasn't consumed though. Given how focused my female becomes when feeding, I am lucky I haven't lost one of my males!

I currently have 2.2 possibly 2.3 Thrasops jacksoni (the odd female is green and supposed to be T. aethiopisa but may be a "green" subadult), lots of mating last year but no eggs! Here's hoping for more success this year.

Regards Mark
