Needs a nail trim

thehauntedchambe Feb 15, 2004 04:22 PM

Can anyone suggest a good way to trim the over-grown toe-nails of an Ornate Box turtle. This is a captive bred and raised turtle whose nails have never been worn down. So, she now walks on them rather than her feet. I have only had the turtle a small amount of time and tried to simply provide subtrate that would ware the nails down. This isn't happening. So, how do I clip them? What length should they be? Where is the quick? or should I just take her to the vet.

My suggestion would be to take it to a vet's office and ask them to show you the proper way to do it, handling tips, etc. Then when you get it back home you can do as Rouen suggests (if you haven't already): a slightly rough, unyielding surface is necessary.
If you've recently acquired the turtle, it may not be a bad idea to take it for a check-up anyway, presuming you know of a herp vet with experience with turtles.

Stephanie
