what box turtles do not hibernate? TRYING TO CHOOSE between herman, leopard, scalata? FIRST box turtle.
I dont know alot about tortoises but I do know..
hermanns get around 7-12" SCL leopards.. depending on subspecies get somewhere between 12-24" I might be a little off on that.. and sulcatas grow up to be the 3rd largest tortoise species in the world reaching a legnth of 36" or so and around about 200lbs.. mind you an adult leopard tortoise will get about 80-100 lbs, as for boxies.. you didn;t say how you plan on housing the animal.. outside? inside? why dont you want to hibernate?
well floridas dont hibernate.. and gulf coasties can go with out and desert boxies as well.. but floridas are rare and tend to be expensive and if I remember correctly they require permits and such(I might be wrong), gulf coasties are a larger subspecies if not the largest getting around 8" SCL or bigger, and luteolas as they are commonly called are rare and dont do so well in captivity.. and there's also the ornate box turtle wish is a picky eater and hard to keep healthy..
is that what you wanted to know?

Box turtles are different from tortoises (family testudinidae) and are exclusive to the Terrapane genera and are in the emydidae family. None of the tortoises you mentioned are exactly easy to care for, and for that matter either are box turtles. I would do a lot more research if I were you before I go out and buy something.

All wild North American box turtles hibernate when the temps become colder in late fall. That is also the time when food sources become very slim. Turtles use hibernation as a survival tool. However if kept indoors, box turtles do not hibernate and should not be hibernated in less then optimal hibernation conditions. They should be maintained at summer like temps and humidity throughout the winter months.
As for helping you choose between those toroises, you may want to ask on the Tortoise Forum. I have not kept any of those species but if I was to pick a tortoise, I would take in a Redfoot or Russian tortoise. They are smaller then those others you listed and fare better in indoor situations.

Those are NOT box turtles they are tortoises those mention DONOT hibernate. the hermann tortoise is on of your smaller ones. the leopard and the sulcata tortoise will get very large. DO some research before getting any kind of tortoise.
