Lighting for a Beardie?

Johnstud56 Feb 15, 2004 08:11 PM

Ok, I am planning on buying a 100 watt UVB UVA Mercury Vapor Lamp and I was wandering how you guys keep the cool side during the day at 80-85 degrees? Will this UVA UVB light put off heat and keep that warm or do I need a basking light on the cool side? Please let me know!!! I think im just gonna put a 100 watt UVB/UVA Lamp on them. Or should I do 160 watt?

For my cool side I just use a regular 60 watt bulb. Keeps it right at 85 degrees. It will differ a little from cage to cage and room to room, but a regular house bulb is all you need for that secondary lighting, nothing special. The more lights you have the better, beardies thrive in lots of light. So less wattage and more bulbs I think is better than one really hot bulb on one side.

It depends on the size of your cage, the brand of bulb, your house temp, etc. You will have to try it and measure the temps and adjust as needed. My cage has a 160 watt powersun bulb and it keeps it warm enough, my cage is 2x2x4. During the summer I need to adjust the bulb so it is farthur away, because it gets too warm in there. Some mercury vapor bulbs don't make as much heat as the powersun.
