leucomelas or terribilis

trinitywolf Feb 16, 2004 07:57 AM

I have been keeping snakes for around 13 years and have decided to broaden to amphibians. I have done a lot of research and am currently setting up a 10 gallon starter aquarium for my first frogs. I am left with the final question as to which frog to put in it.
My two choices are the leucomelas or terribilis. I do not want to start with aurats b/c they tend to be so shy. Does anyone have any pros or cons for which of these two to choose. My understanding is that both are fairly hardy, and bold. I would like some outside opinions though.
Thanks in advance.

Ted

Well I keep auratus but have done my homework on all species, and heres some pros and cons: terribilis would be less shy, but a little more expensive depending who you get it from. Leuc tend to be pretty bold, and if you did want to add another species in the future, they would be the choice. If you dont have access to steady fruitflies, get a terribilis, which will get large enough for crix. Since you only have a ten gallon tank, i would say go with the leucs, they are easy to breed and the males will call regularly. check out American Tropics.com, the guy named ben has really good prices on terribilis, and i got three auratus from him for $45! no problems.

Thanks for your input. I don't think that fruit flies will be a problem as I plan on doing my own cultures.
How much do the leucomelas call? I think that they have a very attractive call, but I wonder if it may be a little annoying since I want to put them in my living room. How loud and often do the terribilis call?

not sure of terribilis but leucs call mostly during the day, but not in excess or every minute of every day. its not a guarantee that you will for one get a male, and for two that male will call and be sexually mature or active. good luck wtih either, both good hardy choices.
