My Royal & King set-up

broom Feb 16, 2004 08:30 AM

After looking at all the helpful suggestions on this forum for a while now, I've finally plucked up the courage to ask everyone if my set-up is ok or if there is anything I could do to improve it. Ideally I'd love to have a bigger tank but unfortunately I am currently restricted for space.

By the way, my Cali King is called Elvis (the KINGsnake) and my Royal is called Colonel Parker because he's a bit of a porker. Future plans are for a female Taiwan Beauty to be called...? No prizes for guessing that name!

Cheers,
Ben

Very nice. My only question is, is that a bare bulb in the BPs tank? I can't tell.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.

Ummmmmmmmmm...... yes...

I expect to be castigated about this but he treats it as a no-go area and never touches it. I take it that it would be better to have a mesh around it? Mounting it outside of the tank would be very tricky.

You can find wire cages the will cover it. Just because he doesn't bother it now (but then again, you don't watch him 24/7) doesn't mean he never will. Better to be safe than sorry.

Even if he seems to avoid it it is SO HOT. Think of how quickly he could burn himself on a hot bulb. Is it possible to put in a heat pad? That would be infinitely safer.
Nice set up though.

Setup looks nice, but it's hard to tell if/where you have hides. What size is the cage? Did you make them or buy them? They look nice.

The enclosure is 3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft. I bought it locally but the construction is so simple I could have saved myself the money by buying the timber and spending a day with a saw! As I've mentioned before it would be great to have more space but that's just not possible at the moment. He is only a couple of years old and after talking to people in my area the cage size is adequate for a little while longer. Is that correct in your view?

For hiding places I've got one long piece of bark that starts in the cool side and goes half way up the tank so he can vary the temperature when he decides to hide.

Colonel seems happy enough, he eats as is expected for a Royal, has decent body mass, climbs now and again and is ok when handled.

Anyway, lunchtime today will herald a trip down town to the local hardware shop looking for mesh. Thanks.

That cage size should do him fine for the rest of his life. Where are you from?

Everything sounds good except you need at least one hide on each side.

Nice job - nice snake!

Born and bred twenty five years ago in Winchester, Hampshire in England.

Cheers for the help, I'll have a play around with Colonels tank tonight and arrange a hidespot in the hot area.

Thats among the best bp setups I've seen in a real long time. Did you buy or build it?

Nice, real nice.

Cheers mate, much appreciated. I bought the tank locally and have had no problems with it, although I think I'll make one next time and put some of my 'creative ideas' into making it nicer for the snake.

I've really enjoyed furnishing it and it's fun making a nice home for the snakes! Two things have worked a treat with my royal and they are putting the hanging false plants in front of the basking place because they seem to make Colonel feel more secure and the second thing is putting the extra piece of wood from the ground to the raised climbing branch because when he then explores he remembers the branches are there! He's not the keenest of snakes to climb but they are there if he wants to.

Thanks,
Ben
