Black Rats

Kevin Saunders Feb 16, 2004 10:49 AM

I used to come here and wonder what the big appeal was with ratsnakes. I didn't really appreciate any except the corns, but that has changed now. I didn't even realize it had happened, but now I find myself drawn to bairds, yellows, and glades rats and I never noticed before. I've had corns for a while, but got my first obsoleta last year at a show from the Joliffs. He's a young licorice black rat and I'm already astounded at how different he is from my corns. He has put on plenty of growth, but hasn't shed yet and I've had him since the end of November (does that sound weird to anyone else?). Anyway, he is always somewhere new in his enclosure and will move to get a better look at me when I'm in the area. He's definately more curious and outgoing than my corns (though to be fair, they are very interested in me on feeding day). I am starting to see how underrated North American rats are now and plan to add more to my collection later on. But for now, I was wondering if anyone felt like sharing pics of their black rats, white-sided, normal, or whatever you have. Thanks.

P.S. Anyone know how long it will take the licorice rats to get their adult coloration? I'm guessing he'll be most of the way there by the time he's a yearling?

HeHeHe. Rat snakes can get you hooked on them. The North American rat snakes are underrated. Here's a pic of my Guthrie, KY black rat snake. She's 3 years old.

The NA rats and kings are my favorite. I like the natural occuring colors better than any of the morphs out there. I currently have:

Male '01 KY black rat snake. Last measurement he was 54" (Dec)

Male '00 KY locale corn. 48" (dec)

A male '02 albino black rat (Dwight Good stock)

A male '03 everglades (Dwight Good)

And a female '03 yellow rat. (Also Dwight Good)

I also plan on getting a grey rat, a greenish rat, and plan on working with some black rats in the future.

They are very addicting and lots of fun to keep. Have fun and post some pics when you acquire more. I always like to see those NA rat snakes!!!

I like both yours and doorgunners snakes. Those KY specimins tend to have colors and pattern and I also like the solid black ones. The pic I posted is a central Pa. wild caught.

You sound more and more like Travis Grasha all the time Brian. Travis wants to have each of the North Amercian rat snakes. He's got quite a few too. Travis has one of the best North American rat snake collections I've seen. He hasn't done one of his picture posts in awhile, but I really enjoy them when he does. All your snakes are looking good Brian. It looks like you are doing the right things. Keep up the good work. Here's a pic for you. He's not a white oak gray rat snake, but he still has a nice color contast to him in my opinion.

Terry
Hey how are ya man, havent heard from ya in a while! Whats going on in your neck of the woods?? Just waitin for spring/summer here!!!! Thanks for the kind words!

I dont know if I want one of each NA rats, but there are some very nice looking rats that I would like to add to my collection.
That grey rat is kind of ugly man, if you want, just send it to me and Ill make sure it gets the proper care!! (grin)

Dwight has some good looking stuff I hear, so I am planning on going down to visit him sometime in the near future. Want to see what he has that I can add to my rat/king collection.

I tell you Terry, I know once I get the grey, greenish, kisatchie corn, plains rat, and bairds added, you guys are going to stick something else on here that catches my eye!! You do it every time!! LOL

But, we all know how darn addicting these critters can be!!!
Take care guy
