Didnt constrict....

DinoTheBall Feb 16, 2004 11:43 AM

FINALLY my new baby ball has taken F/T. First I took her out of her cage and had her on a towel dangling the mouse with forceps and she wouldn't strike. She would get into the "S" position looking like she was goin to explode on the mouse, but then she would get uninterested. So then I put the mouse in her cage on top of the heat pad to stay warm and I didnt think she would eat it because I thought they need to constrict the mouse for themselves as part of the eating process. 10 minutes later I look in the cage and shes gulping it down head first without constricting it. I guess she wasn't going to refuse an easy meal. Do you dangle your mouse or do you just throw it in the cage??? I was a little dissapointed because I love the strike but who cares as long as shes eating like a champ.

I dangle the mouse just above his head, when I have his attention I let go (I use tongs) and as soon as it hits the ground he strikes. Mine does constrict - but that's not important. I had a hard time getting my BP to heat FT until I realized the problem was that I wasn't getting it warm enough. After thawing in warm water I sit the mouse on top of his light fixture. He won't take it unless it's at least 108 degrees on the outside - picky little guy

I used to dangle the mouse/rat by the tail. Now I grab the mouse/rat by the back half and present the head to my snake. I have to literally put it right in front of his face because his aim never has gotten any better. I've recently switched to f/t prey and I've noticed that he just throws kind of a token coil around it now, but he'll still constrict it for a minute or two. And if you don't already have a set, get a set of hemostats from either ProExotics or Tongs.com, they're the exact same price from either place but I'd rather give the money to ProExotics.
