Newt Newbie: California newties

SchismGrl18 Feb 16, 2004 12:04 PM

Allllright. Got some questions: at my local pet store, they have "Orange" newts. I'm pretty sure they are California newts, but everything I've read says they're semi-aquatic/terrestrial; at the store, there are like 6 of them, all in a completely aquatic enviroment. Also, I read that they are mainly solitary, but they are all in one tank.
So, can I keep 2 of them in a 15 gallon tank and would it be best to make their tank semi-aquatic or totally aquatic (with rocks to chill on of course)?
Does anyone on here breed the lil guys?
Thanks so much,
Vanessa

Most likely they are Taricha granulosa, rough-skinned newts:

They could also be (less likely) T. torosa, California newts:

If they are T. granulosa, they are mostly aquatic, as you see in the store. If so, you'd need a mostly aquatic setup.

People do breed them, especially in Europe. The best place to find such people is at the other forum:
