question about green beans

Sam-N-Ella Feb 16, 2004 12:38 PM

I fed my iggys canned grean beans. They absolutely love them so I've been adding them to their food maybe every other day. I offer it as a treat sometimes also. I use a vitamin supplement on their food. Are canned green beans good for them? I give them fresh green beans also as part of their diet. They eat them, but not like the canned ones. It looked like Sams poop was a little runny or mushy for a day maybe 2. It seems to be back to normal now. Could that be from the canned green beans? Should I quit feeding it to them? Or maybe give it to them less? If it's bad for them I won't give it to them at all. I'm just not sure. Thanks.

I would stop feeding them, I would imagine the perservatives being bad for them

I hope It's not going to hurt them. Poor iggys. You should see them go nuts over them. I was hand feeding both of them and Sam came over and stole Eds right out of my hand before Ed could grab it. Then climbed down and started eating right out of the bowl I had the green beans in. You would have thought they were starving or something.

Sam-N-Ella,
I have fed canned greens to different igs from time to time, but more on a "treat" type basis. Maybe twice a month or less. I noticed the runny stool also, but I have noticed different fresh fruits doing the same thing (without overfeeding them). I haven't had any ill effects from feeding the canned veggies every now and then. In fact, I had mentioned something to the effect of feeding canned goods to my igs to my vet once. His response was that he doesn't see a problem with it as a "treat" every now and then because they have a balanced supplemented diet(unless it was like candied yams or something or the same nature). If you are concerned, just cut back. Just a suggestion. My on ig had a thing for canned pineapple.

Thanks, I feel better know. I probably should just cut back on it a little. I think every few days may be too much. It's like children and chocolate. My iggys go nuts for them. I haven't tried pineapple yet, hmmm. I'm glad squash is good for them because they love that the same way. Thank you.

Canned veggies have an awful lot of added salt...so unless you can find salt free veggies...I would discontinue the canned...and they lose a lot of nutrients with the cooking process...a treat once or twice a month would suffice...but only if salt free....good luck...lyn

Ok, Thank you. I'll check to see what I have and if it has salt I definately won't give it to them.

Iguana's and a lot of other lizards possess the ability to expell excess salt through a gland.. Marine Iguana's have developed this far beyond your ordinary Green Iguana.. But the Green Iguana still possesses it... I'd be more worried about some of the preservatives than the salt the canned veggies contain. I used to feed canned greens when I couldn't get any fresh ones (living in the cold north sucks.. greens prices go way up in the winter) I'd rinse them off really good... since most of the preservatives are in the liquid surrounding the actual food... then feed them out. My igs always loved the canned stuff so much so I had one refuse to eat for almost 2 weeks because I wouldn't give him canned foods at the time.

Thanks. I'm going to limit how much I give them down to a treat. They would pick them out of their food, but later they would eat the regular greens also.
