Can anyone tell me what this is?

redmoon Feb 16, 2004 12:43 PM

I've tried to have this guy IDed a couple times, and no one seemed to know.. he's a bit bigger now, so i figured someone might be able to tell me.
I bought him a few years ago, as a hatchling labeled as a sinaloan milksnake. Knew right off the bat he wasn't a sinaloan, but liked him, and bought him anyways.
He's 3 years old, and just shy of 2 feet long. He eats like a pig, so he wasn't stunted from hunger.

Thanks,
Ron Nocera

Here's a full body shot, if that helps.

Going strictly off of color and pattern isn't very percise but I would say if it is a milk snake its an arcifera. Outside that I would say ruthveni.

It could be several different things. I do agree with you that it doesn't look like a Sinaloan. I think it is a Pueblan Milk (Lampropeltis triangulum campbelli). The picture was kinda dark and I couldn't make out the markings on the head. Does the head have yellow specks on it or does it just look that way in the picture? And one more question, how much did you pay for it?

redmoon Feb 16, 2004 02:32 PM

He has grey speckling on the tip of his nose, and i think i payed $35 for him. When I got him, he was only about 8 inches long.
I really dont think he's a pueblan.

meh. I hit the post button before finishing my post..

I think he might be a ruthveni, but I really dont know much about kingsnakes. I was hoping someone here would be more experienced

Hi!

I would agree that this is ruthveni. The only thing which makes me not sure about this is the head. All ruthveni I have and saw have some blotches of red on their nose - but in this case it may be a light difference.

Enclosed is one of my ruthveni females for comparisation.

Best regards

im not sure about how long is he now, might be nelsons, i think its pueblan though very similair

Brandon Osborne Feb 17, 2004 02:33 PM

Nope. Nelsons and Sinaloan both are pretty similar, and have extremely wide red bands. Usually only 10-18 triads, but can vary a little.

Pueblans usually have evenly spaced bands and a more clean look to them. They also have a lower triad count, between 10-18, but as mentioned the bands are more uniform and equal in size.

It looks like a Ruthveni to me......could be thayeri......could be a hybrid.

Good luck guessing.

The head shape is not Pueblan. Nor is the pattern.

Zonata???

Or some other milk??

Assuming it is not a hybrid??

Have you tried the Milk forum ? Some of those guys on there can tell you what telephone pole a Milk or King was caught by.
