i want to get a bearded dragon. Is a 36" by 18" by 18" vivarium big enough.

Yes, that size tank would be OK for a single adult beardie that is on the smaller end of the size range. A 40G Breeder (36x18x18) is the bare minimum required, but if you can make it happen, go bigger. Your beardie will enjoy the extra room and they are much more active and interesting to watch when they have lot's of room.
