I'm such an idiot...Help!

Raecroft Feb 16, 2004 01:42 PM

Today after misting my veiled ichabod's cage in the five minutes i spent getting his crickets out he broke his leg .
I have no idea how he did it my best guess is he was holding onto a bar, tried to grab something wet, slipped and broke his little leg...I feel like such a jack@$$ like I caused it, the only vet that deals with herps is closed for presidents dayand I have no idea what to do until tommorow. I am quite sure it is broke because all his other limbs look fine and it is bent at quite a weird angle, also if it matters, I supplement him with calcium 3 times a week, and vit and mineral 1 a week, is there ANYTHING I can do or will I have to wait for the vet to open.

Sorry to hear that. I actually just got back from the vet, getting a mouth infection treated for my Jackson's, amd the vet detected a fracture in his femur. She said it was pretty new, because the bone hadn't set. I was shocked. I saw the x-ray, and it's not bad, but definitely there. His leg is a bit swollen. She said the only thing I can do is up his calcium intake a little and let it heal on it's own. She said splints are nearly impossible with Chams. I would still take him in to your Vet asap. Hopefully the break isn't too bad and will heal ok. IF there is any discoloration or severe bruising or something you may want to try to apply some ice? Maybe not. Just an idea. Might not help for a cold blooded animal.

NO there isn't any discoloration or anything, I called a vet in virginia and she said to up his calcium to about 4-5 times a week, and just let it heal, I'm also suppossed to keep him in a small enclosure or cup feed him so he dosen't have to move as much.

I have my fingers doubly crossed for your cham!!

Please excuse my amusement when I read that your cham's name is Ichabod. When I got my veiled cham, my father in law (Bob) suggested that very name. Well, in honor of Bob my veiled is named "IchaBob"

Please do keep us posted on Ichabod's recovery!

This sounds OK. If your cham is fed carefully and gets exposure to the right lighting (UV) it should heal. Put a network of perches low in a cage so he doesn't have to climb around a lot (or to confine him so he can't move too much...but watch you don't overheat him), offer food by hand or cup, spray and offer water by syringe if he'll take it that way will all help. If you can get him into unfiltered sunlight (open screened window or outdoors) it will help also. Be really careful about your gutloading...not just more calcium (you can overdo it), but fresh dark leafy greens (no spinach or broccoli...they bind calcium), fruits, fortified grains such as Total cereal.

Thanks for all of the tips I just got back from the vet and it turns out it isn't broken, it's a sprain...I still have to keep him in a small cage and cup feed him so that he won't damage it further..he actually is moving it a little.

Yeah when I got him I had a 6 hour drive back so we thought of names...my mom came up with it and she just kept calling him Ichabod it just knida stuck.

Although he is sick his appetite is not deminished(sp) he ate 10 crickets yesterday and has eaten 8 so far and it is only mid-day.
*before he injured hi s leg he was eating about 10-12 a day, so thats a good sign.
