Mites

Usumbara Feb 16, 2004 01:47 PM

Are they visible? I've had tarantulas with mite infestation, and they were visable, but I'm wondering if Reptiles are different.

My Tegu recently escaped for about 48 hours. I found him cold as can be, sleeping under a blanket. I warmed him up, everything was fine. But when I gave him a bath, he started to itch his side. He's not pre-shed, he just finished shedding. I looked close and see absolutely nothing.

Could it be something else?

It only just started happening, so it could possibly be something was just bugging him in the bath.

Yes, mites on reptiles are visible. The best place to check on your Tegu is around the eyes. Mites love eyes an the skin folds on the bottom jaw. As long as you didn't use any kind of soap or any irritant in the bath, it shouldn't be from that. Was he wet when he scratched his side? Who knows, maybe the water drops were bothering him. I have a Gold Tegu that scratches her head alot and it seems to be for no apparent reason other than an itch. Hope that helps.

It must have just been the water: He hasn't done it recently that I've seen. Guess he's just a bit of a freak sometimes.

Yep. Nothing like a good steamy bath to bring out the freaky in things. LOL
