Curious Question for Emerald owners?

Ralph Feb 16, 2004 03:35 PM

Why did you chose Emeralds over chondros (ie. Green tree pythons)? Is it because you just like the way they look better or is there another reason that has to do with their care or temperament? Let me know. I've kept chondros but am considering purchasing and emerald tree boa instead of another chondro so I'm a bit curious.

look at the thread right below of Hunger's new trio of basins and you will know why(LOL)!

Your question is kind of odd. Just because someone works with emeralds, does not mean that they chose them over chondros. I have worked with emeralds for well over a decade and I just personally prefer live bearers over egg layers. Live bearers of most all snake species have always been more of a challenge to breed than egg layers. I like a good challenge. Alot of the same husbandry problems are current in both species, but Emeralds are even more sensitive. Why then, breed Emeralds over Chondros?? Hmmmm, I sometimes ask myself the same question. Just a gluton for punishment I guess............Johnson Herp

Thanks for responding to my post. Sorry if it's a little confusing but I had been speaking to a breeder that was telling me why he switched from keeping/breeding chondros to emeralds. He seemed to find emeralds more intersting and I thought maybe those of you that have them could tell me if you feel the same way and why. Just wanted to some input before I make another purchase.

Hey coolhl7, I agree that one of the most impressive snakes is an amazon basin emerald tree boa however this particular lineage is probably out of my price range right now. But thanks for your reply-those snakes look real nice.

Ralph,
Personally, I have always been interested in Emeralds since the first time I saw one. That was in '73. Until '98 I was unable to dedicate the time needed for thier care. I guess the live-bearer thing is just a bonus. I never really had the same spark of interest for Chondros.

The Reason for me can be summed up in two words "Live YOung". Thought this is not with out it fair share of hardships, emeralds are far more difficult to begin breeding than chondros, but the egg thing is a pain in the ass. that and you better be ready to have a 6.5 foor emmmy dig its 1/4-1/2 inch teeth(all 4 of them) into your arm and chew arround for 10 sec. or you better go to chondroweb.com and chill with the eggheads(not in a bad way. All in all i feel the emerald is a far more interesting animal to keep, and is a creature which you will be passionate about keeping for a lifetime.

p.s. I have keep chondros as well, sorry to all the eggheads for the egghead comment.

I have no idea why I'm partial to Emeralds. We keep a chondro also but im more drawn to ETB's. I posted on the Chondro forum that there are 3 types of people, ETB people, Chondro People, and ones that cant make up thier minds.
