have you kept Emerald tree boas?

Ralph Feb 16, 2004 03:40 PM

Hi,
I have three sub adult chondros that I love. However, I recently spoke with an emerald tree boa breeder that has kind of convinced me to try out an emerald instead of a chondro as my next purchase. He said he has kept and bred both but that emeralds are much more interesting. I am curious to know if here has kept an emerald and could tell me if they have any preference.

Thanks
Ralph

Sounds like a sales pitch to me. I don't know from experience, but I love my chondros.........and I know people that have both and they say the same thing. Chondros are better and more interesting....but that's just me.

Oh come on now, emmys are = in everyway to chondros, i have in the area of 10 designer chondros, 10 "normal cbs" and 5 emmys one "legal patternless"and the personalities are exact in every way, I like to think my chondros are actually much easier to keep than the emmys, and I would much rather get bit by my chondros, although I do hate it either way, but they are all great animals, brilliant , inquisitive. One may be able in the long run to do alot more with chondros as far as breeding , due to availability and huge diversity in shape and color , and "type" . but as so many agree chondro bugs may bite harder than any other snake, I would never not love my emmys because of that fact. I do agree that thats the most blatent sales pitch I have heard but its no different than the post above.lol, d

How are the temperments of your chondros. I have 16 chondros and all but 2 are sweet as can be. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but........ok I think chondro are better. lol. I like their shape better and they don't have that big schnoz like emmies do. I've actually thought about getting into emeralds, but I see so many more chondros that I like better. I will say I'm a bit baised, but like I said, I know people that have or had both and like chondros much better.

yea, it really is a tough one, the where should my money go question is always tough, I find the most difficult thing is that the volumes of chondros available, wc, fb, cb either way is significantly larger, and all of th emmys out ther , except a small margin are rough looking, usually wild caught, and have no info, charts, paperwork, that brings up alot of questons. I know if I want a chondro, even if it only 350 bucks i can find them at least ch, or farmed by someone very reputable, i.e. kamuran/bushmaster.

All in all I dont think any of mine are mean necessarily, I have a yearling red biak that is very sensitive to handling, and has hit me alot, but that.... well thats my fault!

I did get very, very bit about three weeks ago, it was awful, it was a feeding hit , not a defensive, My largest Aru type, whom is extra ordinarily large I think,.well over five feet, maybe six, anyhow hes never been real friendly, I had the door to his cage open about five inches, with rat in the hand holding the door as I moved the big sprayer with the other, Well someone was hungry, and struck through the door, past the rat, and hit my hand, he had a perfect hit, and of coarse retracted back into the enclosure full force with me attached! He fully constricted around the lower region of my arm, well it was very bloody, very very painful, like I yelped like a baby, When he yanked back all of his teeth slid through the meat and down into the bone of my fingers, , basically I manually unwound him, although challenging -sucessful, held his lower half between my legs, then carefully-for both of us- manipulated his mouth open, and slid his top row off of the fingers by pushing down his throat with the grain, then the bottom, I was very proud I reacted that way, as my first instinct was to cut his head off.lol.

Long winded I am -yes. so thats the wost in chondrodome I have had, now on another note, I have two emmys that I have no interest in ever holding, ever, they have huge teeth, like 1inch solid, and multiple sets on top and bottom, no way, not a chance. They are by far stronger animals than chondros. well thats my opinion anyway- d

pugnose or longnose, both GTPs and ETBs great. I prefer ETBs BUT NOTHING, NOTHING< compares to the photos I have seen of hatchling GTPs crawling out from the coils of a female GTP incubating her eggs.(I dont kow how you eggheads can take the eggs away from a mom just trying to do her job!LOL)

Brandon, is that a recent shot? Awsome event! I have a pair of sorong types working towards that! Its such a cool thing to see the mom incubating, and hatching her own. Thank God we dont have to do all that to have ours. d

This is from last year's hatch. I took the exact same picture, with one red and one yellow, 2 years prior to this one........and almost on the exact same day. The first clutch pipped March 26th 2001, and this one pipped March 23rd 2003. Kind of a neat coincidence.

Well pat yourself on the back, lucky man, I havent yet enjoyed the blessing. Most of my females are just coming of age or are only a few months away, of coarse that means very eager males. I do have an emmy who no one really knows if shes gravid or not, She has the girth of a burm, and I am not kidding, she has had one meal in 5 months or so, all of the weight is in the mid to lower hald, its really crazy, I am crossing my fingers with my sorongs, they have been at it off and on for a feww weeks now, there has been ovulation, I seen some hemos but am not totaly sure if there has been success, guess I will see in a few weeks/months. d

yep, your photo is awesome! Its whats its ALL about. A mother GTP incubating her own eggs as it was meant to be. Screw the incubators. You had almost 2 months of the most beautiful sight any herp enthusiast can hope to have. Congrats!!!!!!! I think Bushmaster has a few Indonesia farm photos similar to yours but yours is the best!!!!Norm

Oh yeah, BTW, one yellow and one red baby in the same shot! PERFECT!

DaveM Feb 19, 2004 09:29 PM

I think there are three types of people, Chondro people, Emerald people, and ones that cant make up their mind. I am a ETB person though, but I still love looking at this forum

no matter what they are both great snakes.

No 4 types and the fourth - its me as I love my
"Green Emerald Tree Boa Python" They are diverse in so many ways but so amazing either way. damien

I appreciate you all giving your side. I think I'm leaning towards the appreciation of both (although I'm not too big a fan of many Surinam/Northern etb). Although to be honest, you guys kind of scared me talking about the size of the emerald teeth.

Thanks again,

Ralph
