Nightcrawlers As A Staple??

oogieboogie Feb 16, 2004 03:56 PM

I have 2 ~2 year old beardies (one male and one female ~17 inches each)...they eat collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, and carrots every day. I don't feed crickets too often, only once or twice a week. I was wondering if I could substitute nightcrawlers for crickets. They are much easier to keep and the dragons love them!
Thanks,
Dan Kelly

They are considered nutritious far as bugs go... Its good as a supplement, alongside the greens and other insects. I believe it'd be wise to keep and give as wide a variety of food as possible (eg: rotate the type of greens you use, different insects - meal worms, silk worms, butter worms, wax worms, crix... All gut loaded and/or dusted as par the regular dusting schedule). My boy gets 2 leafy greens, 1-2 veggies, and a fruit per feeding rotated daily/weekly as par a list I'd been doing research on; with the insects (like the earth worms, wax worms, silkies, et al) as a topper, then the crix once or twice a week. They seem to go for more greens then bugs as they age (latest report on wild beardie studies showed a 50/50 of bugs and greens for stomach content in wild critters). Anywho, I hope this has been helpful.
