humidity question

sandfireman Feb 16, 2004 05:18 PM

hey gang, i have a female BP, she is about a year old, anywayz, i have her in a 45 gallon tank, with bark chips as substarte. Im still fiddeling with the temprture becuase the weather is being tricky. I spray her about everytime i look into her cage, i get the humidity up to like 80% but then when i come back 2 hours later, its back down two 30%. I'm thinking about buying a fogger because i d have a live plant in there, it will look neat, and it will help the humidity, right? Another question is that is a fogger and a humidifier the same thing, which one is better/like more. thanks

I don't believe they are the same. I heard someone else say that foggers make the environment too wet. Try covering most of your tank top with duct tape. I have my entire screen top covered with duct tape and left openings for light - this doubles as ventilation. I then added a Tropic-Aire Humidifier with Air Exchanger and air pump. Doesn't wet the inside just provides humid air.

Here's a link to a discussion on the topic:

However, if your snake will use a humid hide you can just put one on the warm side and not have to worry about the humidity in the entire tank.

Other ideas:
cover top
add a second water dish over heat pad on warm side
misting
cover top with damp towels
use the Repti-Flo product

I cover my top with a towel and wet it twice per day that works really good.

Thank you so much for the tips, i think im going to try the ductape over the screen lid. I would do wet towels but my dad thinks its to much of a fire hazourd. I might also buy a humidifier along with the duct tape. I hoping this will work for me. Thanks again

The least expensive way to take care of the humidity dilema is a humidity box. My vet recommended it, so I tried it, and it's worked beautifully since. Here's the "how to":

It's very simple actually. You'll need:

* a TupperWare type container. Size accordingly.

* a sharp object to cut through the plastic. (I used a small saw)

* and some moss or another absorbent substrate. (You can use a cut-out piece of towel, CareFresh substrate, Sph. Moss and a number of other things i'm not thinking of i'm sure)

That's it.

Take the substrate and make it damp, like a well rung towel, and place it in the humidity box(I actually make it a bit more wet than that, but the vet recommended the "well rung towel" version). Make sure you cut the hole on the top or on either side. Place it on the warm side of the enclosure and your set yo go.

Your going to want to clean it and change the substrate weekly. If the substrate is soiled, replace it.

You can also check out the HabbaMist from ZooMed. It's a mister on a timer. You can set duration of spray and intervals. One drawback is that it's loud. It is effective though.
It has tubing that goes directly in the enclosure and sprays where you direct it, not the whole enclosure.

Hope this somewhat helps.

spaghum moss is what i use in my humid hide for my kenyan sand boa. my bp won't use it though, so i had to go with the Tropic-Aire.
