pinkies...

restlesswind444 Feb 16, 2004 07:12 PM

I have a pair of mice that I am breeding right now to economize pinky costs. Today she had 13 pups and I plan on freezing them for future use with my, about to be mated, females. Should I let them feed and grow for a day or two or freeze them right away? what is the accepted way to euthanize them? how about in a deli cup in the freezer. How long can frozen pinkies last without getting funky and how should they be packaged? and is it a good idea to only use pinkies during egg development?
Thanks for ur help,
Chris

Well, first off, you may have a hard time getting a gecko to recognize a f/t pinkie as food. Snakes do this because they have a very developed sense of smell and they are attracted to heat. My geckos have only eaten them live, and some of them simply refuse them no matter what. What type of gecko are you feeding? Perhaps with a lot of coaxing and jiggling and a VERY hungry gecko, you could get one to take it. Wouldn't hurt to warm it pretty well too. I feed pinkies to my leopard, tokay, and bent-toed geckos year-round, whenever I have extra available. They'll last at least 8 months in the freezer. You don't need to pre-kill them, just place them in a baggie in the freezer and their hearts will stop rather quickly. Good luck getting them to take it!

Ain't that the truth. It is hard as hell to get them gockos to eat a f/t pink. I've been trying to get my female tokay to take one. Not happening. I think I'm gonna have to switch to live. I've heard of roaches that are higly nutritious for them too. I'll post the name of them when I re-remember. I have to ask my friend what they are called again.
