pinkies...

restlesswind444 Feb 16, 2004 08:36 PM

I have a pair of mice that I am breeding right now to economize pinky costs. Today she had 13 pups and I plan on freezing them for future use with my, about to be mated, females. Should I let them feed and grow for a day or two or freeze them right away? what is the accepted way to euthanize them? how about in a deli cup in the freezer. How long can frozen pinkies last without getting funky and how should they be packaged? and is it a good idea to only use pinkies during egg development?
Thanks for ur help,
Chris

Hmm... for leos I like giving them live ones, but I guess F/T ones work too for some.

I kill mine using CO2 (takes a while though). If I'm low on CO2, I'll put them in a ziplock bag along with some of their bedding, and they'll asphyxiate themselves to death (make sure to leave a little bit of room or they suffocate to death, don't squeeze all the air out, just most of it).

Depends on the size of your mice on whether you wanna let them grow or freeze them right away. My mice are big and they have big pinks (but only a few of them, 6-7, instead of a dozen or more), so I feed them right away, and the rest go to my cornsnake.

asphyxiation is all the same no matter how much air you leave in the bag. A good thump on the head would be much less painful, if you dont have Co2.
Most leos wont eat F/T...but I suppose a few would. I would make sure of it first before freezing a whole litter, and having them go to waste. Best to feed live. The more you let them feed before feeding, the healthier and fatter they are, kinda like gutloading mealworms and crickets.
