Bloody Urates, What Do You Think...

abstractcypher Feb 16, 2004 08:36 PM

Bixby, my adult male Beardie, has blood in his stool. I first noticed it with my adult female, but it has since gone away with her. I took a fresh fecal sample to the vet today so i should be getting some results really soon now. My first thought was intestinal impaction. My question is: Can they still pass urates and poop if their impacted? And if so, would be it a smaller amount?
My next step is to take them in to see the vet, but I want to see what the results of the fecal sample are first. What do you think? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

worms can cause blood in the stools and gram negative bacteria infections.

I have never seen an impaction cause any bleeding, but thats not saying it may not happen, just never observed in it one that we know was impacted.

Also, make sure it is nothing some food you are feeding that is red, berries can stain feces as can red pellets, peppers and tomatoes

Well, as for foods, it may be the red pellets. I hadn't thought of that. He doesn't eat really anything else red. Doesn't like strawberries, rasberries or anything along those lines.
He has mated recently. About two weeks ago.
He and his cage mate were treated for pinworms about 4-6 weeks ago. Do they come back this quickly after treatment?
Thanks for the help Cheri.

you might want to get a gram stain or culture done to check for bacteria.

When treated for pinworms, what was the treatment routine?

The vet administered it himself. looking at my records it was Fenbendazole, 100mg/ml/CC. I had to bring them in twice for it.
