Few Questions about mice breeding (lots of Qs)

paradisio Feb 16, 2004 09:39 PM

I read some very good info on here, very helpful people here unlike some other forums...

1. How big of a harem can I fit in a 10 gallon?

2. What is the ratio of water/vanilla? I was going to use regular bottles so I don't worry about the fungus.

3. How much do pet stores usually buy frozen mice/pet mice for?

4. What kind of containers can I use for housing that they won't be able to chew out of? And please provide what harem I can put in there.

5. How big should the hide boxes be?

6. I appear to have lost the link the the mouse sexing page, if anyone could provide it I would be most appreicative.

7. Who provides good quality racks for mice?

8. What cross breeds look nice? I am doing this primarily to make some side cash, give to herp friends (or maybe give to my leos in the future), and ferret treats when I get one.. but might as well make some interesting looking mice as well.

9. What substrate works good? Aspen?

10. Someone said they wired the bottles inside the cage to prevent escapes, how can I do this?

11. Food, what do you reccomend? I hear some dog food is great but I never found a brand, one would be appreciated.

12. Last but not least, where can I buy mice? 90% of the pet stores near me either don't carry them, or are Petco and Petsmart and I hear they don't sell them as feeders (and I think they would know what I am doing with them when I ask for 3 females and one male) but I guess this technically isn't using them as feeders.

1) You could probably fit a 1.3- just squeezinga 1.5 in there.

2) not to sure on this, as I was always under the impression
that you just apply it directly to the the base of the tail?

3)That depends where you are at. Here in KS (US) it is 1.29 for adult mice and .99 cents for pinks, and 1.19 for fuzzies.

4)you can use anything that they can't chew through. Anything that don't have a lip, completely flat. OR you can get the smallest holed hardware cloth, make a "basket" for whatever sized container you are working with, we will say a 10 gal roughneck rubbermaid. (I personally was keeping a 1.2 rats in mine). Make sure the hardware cloth goes all the way up the sides.
Take the lid and cut out the middle of it. Put the same hardware cloth on the inside of the lid, make sure it covers the cut edges and tightly bolt it into place. (only from personal expierence). This also makes for easy clean up. As when you go to clean you just lift the "basket" out and out comes the substrate.
and a 10 gal roughneck rubbermaid should be able to hold a 1.6 easily.

5)for breeders you really don't need hide boxes.

6) sorry I don't know that page, but the males do have a tendency to have big "torpedos" at the rear.

7)www.visioncages.com has some awesome cages, but are quite expensive.

8)Just go and get fancy mice if you want something colorful, they have them in all sorts of colors to chose from!

9)Personally aspen is really expensive in my area, so for my breeders I use pine on the bottom, then I put a light covering of "confeti" shreded paper. I just bought a confeti shredder and the rats love the little bits of paper.

10) I don't know how they did this but I will tell you what I did.

I drilled a hole the appropriate length up, low enough for any babies to get, but high enough that the adults can easily get to it.
I got the little plastic hooks that you hang pics on in your house, got them from wal-mart. The hooks curve up really high, went and got some chain, that is where the twine, and nylon rope is at wal-mart, only 46cents a ft.

I took the picture hangers and put three on the side of the sterelite tub with the sticky pads that come with it. Put one water bottle in and put the chain on the 1st hook and the middle hook, then I put the other water bottle in, and put the chain on the second hook. so it holds both water bottles up, but if needed I can get to each one seperatly. I'm sorry but I don't have a digi cam to show you.

11) I wouldn't recommend dog food for mice. Dog food DOES have some meat in it, and mice are usually just seed/plant eaters. So maybe a cheap mouse food. But I you could just look at the ingrediants and take the cheapest one that has the less amount of meat in it.

1) I got my breeders from Pet co and a local place. I got a 1.1 from pet co, They actually had feeder rats/and mice there.

If you want to get them from pet co, if they really ask just say "the 3 females are for me, and my friend wanted another "insert color selected" mouse to add to her group!". But I really doubt they will question you. Just make you sign this thing that says you will give them a good home and that they are not for snake food.

I hope I helped. I don't have much expierence with breeding mice. But they are alot like rats!

What did you mean by bolt down?

Also how do I feed them?

paradisio Feb 17, 2004 12:57 AM

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to convert these to mouse containers while not getting escapes, as I have read some stores about them. Thanks

How bad is the smell of a small colony (like 8 mice)?

I was going to put them in my attic space but if it is stinky and permeates the entire house it won't work out

MissHisssss Feb 17, 2004 01:45 AM

Use one teaspoon of imatation vanilla extract to one gallon of water. I hear that imatation is better than the pure vanilla as it doesn't build up as much goo.

It works... but you also have to keep the cages clean as well.

Cleaning isn't a problem, I am home until late in the morning... And I make sure all my animals are well cared for, no matter the place in the food chain :P

How much of the smell does it cut out on?

MissHisssss Feb 17, 2004 01:56 AM

It helps a lot. And I would suggest that when you change their bedding that you add a little to the clean cage. I think that this keeps the male from rescenting his territory as much... but don't quote me on that.

I would go 1.4 max.

Don't know, don't use. It clogs stuff and I just keep cages clean.

Fifty cents....some will give you 60.

>>4. What kind of containers can I use for housing that they won't be able to chew out of? And please provide what harem I can put in there.

I use walmarts sterilite containers and be sure and get ones that don't have a lot of pits/lips or bumps inside that the mice can get teeth into. Easier to clean too. I have had one group chew one cage...it was one particular PITA mouse and otherwise noone chews nothing.

>>
>>5. How big should the hide boxes be?

Mine are about 15X20.....probably 12 deep but you don't have to go with that. But I like to be able to leave it open for a sec and not have mice hopping out, and I have room, so I go with the deeper ones. Makes it so I can hang a bottle inside in a guard too.

My local shops go for speckled colors or some of the tans etc.

>>9. What substrate works good? Aspen?

I use rabbit pellets in each corner and shavings otherwise for mice. Rats get all pellets. Keeps odor down a lot
>>

I don't. The little monsters tend to like to chew bottles.

>>11. Food, what do you reccomend? I hear some dog food is great but I never found a brand, one would be appreciated.

I go with cheapo undyed dog kibble. Not complicated. Blue Seal Krunchies or whatever brand Sam's carries. I mix in leftovers, veges,oat/corn/sunflower mix, stale cereal.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.

Here is my take on your questions:

1. How big of a harem can I fit in a 10 gallon?

1:4 or 1:5

2. What is the ratio of water/vanilla? I was going to use regular bottles so I don't worry about the fungus.

I beleive its one teaspoon to a gallon. Personally, I tried this, didn't notice much difference in the odour so stopped. To kill the smell in the room I keep my mice, I bought Wizards Pet Odour control air freshioner. It smells a bit like cinnamon. Some people just boil cinnamon sticks and leave dishes of the water in the room with their mice, to kill the odour. A open dish of vineger works too, if you don't have anything in the room that would spill it. Change it once a week or sooner, as vinegar evaporates and leaves a nasty smelling residue after.

3. How much do pet stores usually buy frozen mice/pet mice for?

haven't sold any mice/rats to petstores yet so can't say here. I do know my local petstore sells frozen pinkies $1 a piece.

4. What kind of containers can I use for housing that they won't be able to chew out of? And please provide what harem I can put in there.

I use various sterlite or rubbermaid containers. Other than having a mouse that figured out it could jump 12" straight up and escape, never had any chew through it.

5. How big should the hide boxes be?

I use half of a coffee cup holder you get at any coffee shop. ALso, toilette paper rolls. I add some shredded paper for them to make nests out of.

6. I appear to have lost the link the the mouse sexing page, if anyone could provide it I would be most appreicative.

I don't remember the link myself, but easest way to sex mice is checking the distance between anus and urethra (that little nub thing all mice have). ALso, at the fuzzy state, you can see the nipples on females easily. Once 4 weeks old, the male testicles drop down and are easy to see, just keep in mind, they can pull their testicles back into their bodies if nervous (typically when being picked up by the tail so you can check LOL). Look for bigger space to determine your males (typically about a quarter inch for 4 week or older males).

7. Who provides good quality racks for mice?

other than those already mentioned, can't help you here, sorry.

8. What cross breeds look nice? I am doing this primarily to make some side cash, give to herp friends (or maybe give to my leos in the future), and ferret treats when I get one.. but might as well make some interesting looking mice as well.

The solids with white or cream underbellies are quite nice looking, They call these fox or fawn I think. I like the solid colours more than broken but that is my personal taste.

9. What substrate works good? Aspen?

Aspen is very good for small animals like mice but can be expensive. CareFresh and other paper products are good too. I use pine shavings in well ventilated containers over a layer of newspaper and newspaper shavings. Its just more cost effective for me to do this and since they are feeders, giving them a long life just isn't necessary.

10. Someone said they wired the bottles inside the cage to prevent escapes, how can I do this?

I wrap wire around my water bottles, pretty much just by cutting about a foot or more of wire (doesn't have to be really thick or stiff, just strong enough to hold the weight of a full bottle of water. THe wires used for stems on artificial flowers is good). I fold it losely in half (so there is no crease at the halfway point, just enough bend to tell where the half way point is), I wrap the ends around the bottle, twist it tight against the bottle, then wrap it again, twist and use the excess as hocks to hang the bottle from the edge of the container, trimming as needed. Adjust the position of the bottle so the spout is facing the right direction and is the right height. If you wrapped tight enough the bottle will be held securely, but don't tie it so tight that it dipples the bottle or you can move the bottle up or down to adjust it.

11. Food, what do you reccomend? I hear some dog food is great but I never found a brand, one would be appreciated.

I use a mix of seeds, nutriblocks and dye/perserative lacking dogfood. Budgee seed mix or wild birdseed mix is good for the seed part, add about a cup of nutriblocks and dogfood to 4 or 5 cups of birdseed. If you buy the budgee seed mix, pick up a bag of raw sunflower seeds and crushed corn and add about half a cup of each to the budgee seeds. The wild birdseed mix already has this so you don't extra sunflower seeds.

If I could get the pre-prepared rodent chow, I would use just that but I can't get it up here in Canada easily.

I would just ask for your group of mice and if htey ask if you plan on feeding them off to your reptiles, say no. Afterall, you don' want to feed off your breeding group anyway. However, I would make sure you get young mice, (newly weaned is best, though you may have to wait a few more weeks before breeding the females, just to ensure they are grown enough. Petstores tend to sell their babies at as young an age as possible, about 3 weeks, which is a bit too young to separate them from their mothers. 4 weeks old is better. I would get the male from another store, just to lessen the chance he is related to the females. Why inbreed when you don't necessarily have to.

Stop by the Petco on Wesleyan and see me, I'm the Small Animal specialist. Yes, Petsmart doesn't sell feeder mice/rats, but not only do we sell live, we've got a contract with Gourmet Rodent. I'll be happy to help on the live ones/ setting up a colony. By the way, yes the vanilla works wonderfully. I've managed to talk my GM (gen. manager)into letting me use it up at work, and I'd say it's knocked the odor down at least 60%...along with the twice-weekly bedding changes, of course.
