Losing females (repeatedly)

caseyblues92 Feb 16, 2004 11:04 PM

I'm a frustrated newbie. I have a male that I've had now for three years... but I keep losing my females. The first female I had, lived for about a year and three months. Got egg-bound, and didn't make it.

The second female just faded and died - never had any idea what happened to her.

The third female was a baby that I bought from a breeder. She lived several months, and one morning when I went in to feed her, she was dead.

So now I need to know - I assume this is not normal? Can someone review with me and figure out what I'm doing wrong? My male seems healthy (currently brumating) but is lonely... and I don't want to get another girl and lose her!

Hi, I have seen your post for sometime now, its alittle slow lately.
The first girl, if eggbound, theres not much that can be done. It is a terrible thing that just happens, and many of us can only hope, to figure out why someday, and correct it.
As some on here have lost their females to egg binding !

The second and third girl you lost , you can only speculate , guess, whatever. If the second girl just faded away I would have to say maybe parasites (worms).

The last girl you said was a baby, she may just have been too young to put in with your adult male. I dont know if you ever saw any marks on her, or saw any kind of aggression. Sometimes sexual aggression. Hard to say.

Just seems like some bad luck, I would buy a healthy captive bred female, the same age or atleast close in size, and just forget the past bad experiences.

If he is healthy, than it does not appear to be anything in the tank. I would go for it, and see what happens, Hopefully this time it will all work out ! But remember try for around the same size. just buy an adult cb female.

Oh and keep your eye on them for awhile, just to make sure, hes okay with her !

Let us know how ya make out,

Eve

Hi Eve,

I tried to find a herp vet for the second female. Called the local University, and they said that their one and only herp vet had so many clients that she would not take new ones. She never called me back, and by the time I tried to call her again, the female was already gone.

The baby that died was not in with my male. She was caged seperately, so agression was not a problem. I really wondered if she got hold of a cricket that had something bad, cause it happened so fast. She looked bloated after she died, and there was not enough time for her to have decomposed at all, so I figure something was in her gut - parasites, bacteria, whatever... (?)

So, I guess I'll try again, but it sure has made me discouraged!

Theres things that happen to us all at one time or another, that leave us bewildered.

A few of our forum buddies have had some major loses also.

Skyliner, is one who lost several. He has only had access to very thin lizards in the UK and no matter what he tried, he lost them, and felt the same way !
But continued on and now has some very awesome ones !

Respitory infections have been occuring and some big loses to a good buddy Johneee Eddington lately. (SORRY Johneee)

Last breeding season, I had eggs right up till hatch time, and they looked wonderful.
Only to not hatch, I opened them, to find all were perfectly formed beautiful babies, but for some reason all died ! BUMMED ME OUT ! I was ready to BAG IT TOO !

But I love this breed and have to keep trying my best !

Thats just a few bad experiences lately, you can't give up. Just Find a nice healthy female and give it your best !

Eve
