i was thinking and was wonderin..............................

trevorbennett Feb 17, 2004 12:40 AM

can you cross 2 different types of uros together? i'm wondering if i put together a mali and a whatver....would they breed? could i try to get a different colro range? or would they just be some malis and some whatever? or would they be mixed?

would crossing species be done as easily as normal breedin (not that thats easy)? would a cross have any possibility of producin anything desirable? or would they just be unwanted "mutts"?

thanx all for humorin me

From what I understand intermixing species is a rare event and if it does come about the offspring are usally sterile. Kinda like a mule: horse and donkey - very close in gentics so breeding is possible, but mules cannot reproduce.

just food for thought!

In theory, if you have the same amount of chromosomes, and there are no reproductive barriers, it should work. I don't know if there are any reproductive barriers, but I'm betting you'd get some type of offspring. I'm going to try a mali x saharan this summer.

Within the genus Uromastyx there are several groups of species which are quite closely related to each other and there is a more distant relation between the groups. Some hybrids between the closely related species have already been produced and I assume that a lot if not all species within a group can interbred FULLY FERTILE!
That should be enough reason to keep all species seperately and avoid any hybridization.
Otherwiese we may sooner or later end up with a mess of c.b. animals of uncertain origin and spurious "genetic composition".

or they will just start to be named after their colors/patterns... kinda like leopard gecko's if it went that far.

I dont want to sound like the bad guy, but i think i might have some mutts on the way. I have a 1.1 malis pair that bred last year, and this year i added 1 ornate female and 1 moroccan female. The weird thing is the moroccan female started to mount my malis female maybe because of dominancey. Now I am 90% sure my malis female is gravid. The weird thing is the moroccan female that was mounting my female is also starting to get fat really fast. When i look at pores and lift up the tail, it looks like a male, but it is almost like she is gravid because i can feel little jelly bean like things in her, and she is starting to dig in the nesting box. So I think i have malis and malis X moroccans hatchlings on the way. Just in case the moroccan "female" doesn't lay any eggs and turns out to be a male, should i keep the malis hatchlings if they hatch to make sure they aren't malis X moroccans. Also, i know people have accidentally cross bred malis and moroccans before, and i know that we got some of our sub-species from natural cross-breeding in the wild. So i dont think that cross breeding is anything near bad, because with time you can come up with really cool color patterns. Also, wouldn't it be cool to have a egyptian sized uro with the coloring of a moroccan. Also if cross breeding uros became a big hit, you could still buy pure breds from reputable breeders. This is a really crappy analogy, but i will say it anyways. We have a lot of dogs that are muts, and a lot of dogs that are pure breds. If you want a pure bred you can still go out there and find a breeder and get one. And if you want a mix of a few different breeds or if you want something that is different from everything else, you can look for mutts that fit your desires. So why not breed different species of uros together, how are there any bad outcomes if there aren't any health hazards from cross breeding. If i do end up with moroccan X malis hatchlings what do you think they will look like if the malis is a normal malis and the moroccan is totally lime green with yellow and black plus a little red on the tail.
