Somewhat OT, but I gotta ask....

pspguy Feb 17, 2004 08:22 AM

For the members of us older crowd thats around here... (I'm almost 28), I have just had something on my mind lately. Just for a bit of background, I have been divorced for about 2.5 years now... it seems to me that whenever I meet a woman, and we start talking, or dating, when she finds out how serious I am about my reptiles it chases them away. So my question is, for you married folks, did you get into your leos and other herps after being married, or before... and for you single folks, where do you find someone that doesn't mind you loving yoru lizards? LOL

Hey Jeff,

Well I have always been into all kinds of animals. I married a woman that loves animals as well. I didn't really know if she would like reptiles. I just caught a Kingsnake one day and took it over to her, she loved her, named her Jewel right on the spot. She is a little shakey on the mealworm/superworm thing, that's ok cuz I got my boys as back up to feed my leos when I'm away. As for the Leo's she loves em.

If the women you are dating are getting pushed away by your reptiles, let them go it would only cause big conflict later. I'm 36 by the way and I can honestly say the woman you truely click with will love your pets as much as you do.

She's out there and worth the wait. I know mine was.

I'll be old and single and known as Lizard Lady hehehe. Trying to find a partner with similar interests is very difficult, trying to find one that likes reptiles, is even harder. I was once engaged and for the longest time i thought *he was the one* but it didn't work out. It was for the best......for both of us. Now i doubt i'll find a man who loves herps AND medieval history like i do enough to have a medieval wedding..... It really is a challenge dating. Alot people don't like reptiles... and i know a few who still believe they are the devils creatures....*shakes head*.

I hope i find someone who can love my leos just as much as they love me LOL. Only time will tell. I'm 27 by the way....i know its not old but man do i feel old LOL.

HEHEHEHEHE, yes i'm 27 but i'm also Canadian and when i say Medieval wedding i mean men in tights type of thing HAHAHA (knights of the round table period of history). I do hate being single.....i was engaged at 22 and was looking forward to kids. I don't want to be past 30 and still not a mom.

When two people with reptiles decide to move in together how do you quarentine the lizards??? LOL *kidding* I think my first argument would be whose lizards go where. My eight foot unit would make a wonderful display in say a living room...but i have enough tanks to fill a good portion of a house. I'll just have to get a huge house i guess hehehe.

Well dang, I hate the cold, so I could never move to Canada, lol. I'm a beach bum, I'm not sure I could live away from Virginia Beach again... As for where the reptiles go in the house, all of my tanks are display pieces, so they could go in about any room...

On a side note, I bought tickets to fly to FIRE in Orlando this year today

RedQuake Feb 17, 2004 10:31 AM

Yes it is cold up here.....been very very cold for a while now. I think i'll have a reptile in about every room in my house....i've already taken over the basement of my parents house. I'm hoping to put my two new crested geckos upstairs so everyone can enjoy them.

What do you mean by FIRE? is it a show? I've been to the US but only passing through, travelling south of the Great Lakes instead of north of them on our trips out west.

Yes, FIRE is a very big reptile show in Orlando each year. Since I only just got into my herp last spring, I only went to one show last year in Raleigh, NC. This year I'm planning trips with my brother (he has beardies), and my best friend, just to see lots of reptiles, and party for 3 straight days, lol. I'm thinking I might take a camcorder, but then I'm not sure I want the evidence on tape..

RedQuake Feb 17, 2004 10:39 AM

If your flying there do you plan on getting some more reptiles? If so how do you plan on bringing them back? Will they let you fly with a gecko?LOL I haven't been to any shows YET. I hope to go this April.....im doing everything i can to make sure i do get to go. There is one this coming weekend but i'm working so....I'll be taking a girlfriend from work who's into herps like i am. She would like to get a leopard gecko so i'm helping her set things up.

Then again, i'll no sooner get everything set up the way i want and come into some money to buy myself a house, so i'll have to move everything again, not that i'd mind

Well... I am an old "32" year old married woman with two chidren

I got into reptiles after we were married. My husband is really not a pet guy at all, but he is very tolerant of my animals. He even built the racks for me

You may not be able to find someone with exactly the same interest, but I bet you will be able to find someone who is OK with your love for reptiles.

I'm 32 and single again. I think it's harder for a man to find a woman who is into reptiles...I'm a woman and it's still hard! LOL! I've had a couple guys run the other way too.

Maybe we should be looking to pick up prospective dates at reptile shows and pet stores...? LOL!!

RedQuake Feb 17, 2004 04:12 PM

HEHEHE i'm abit embarrassed to admit it but i was thinking of not only checking out the reptiles at the show but also the men LOL. I agree it must be harder for men to find a woman into herps. Us gals are special ya know hehehe.

Hi

Don't feel funny about it, I went to my very first small reptile show ever with a girlfriend of mine and she is gorgous compaired to me, and I went to this one table there and started talking to this guy vendor there and he heard how much I liked reptiles and he made a pass at me and asked me to go out on a date.

its all good man, im 20 yrs old and im with a girl that i deff think i could ask to marry me any time. i never wanted to settle down till i met her. in all the girls that ive introduced my pets to, about 75% of them loved the herps. the rest just ran out of my room when i pulled them out, or made me put something infront of there tanks so they would have to look at them. jackie (the girl im with now) went to the last reptile show with me and accually bought an amizon tree boa, and named it sweetness(my pet name for her) when i had my back turned looking at anther venders animals. it stays at my house with my ATBs but she still loves them almost as much as i do. so if those girls run away wen they find out about ur animals. i have to agree with shuler06 on this one. and i think you and redquake should hook up .
best wishes

I know i'm only 27 but if i had known then what i know now........i would have started with herps long ago HAHAHA. Actually i've always love herps....i was a tom boy growing up so if i wasn't up a tree i was searching for creatures and bringing them home LOL. We used to camp alot when i was young and i remember vividly a guy in another camp site beside ours picking up what he thought was a stick.....it was a snake. He freaked out and threw it into our camp....my mom refused to go back until we made sure it wasn't around LOL I was also apart of the Young Canadians Challenge....we had to do community work, and expeditions (hiking) to get awards (bronze, silver and gold). During a few of the camping/hiking trips up north(lasted for like a week) one of the girls i was with wouldn't get off her butt to move....some people just aren't up to camping LOL. She ran after i picked up a toad....LOL. I would get frustated cause everyone just wanted to get to the next camp spot instead of taking the time to enjoy the view...and all the animals we came across. Snakes, walking sticks, salamanders etc. For the most part i walked alone cause i was carrying a snake or something (i always returned them to the wild LOL).

I would like to expand into some of the larger reptiles and maybe a snake or two. Like i said, i'll be known as Lizard Lady LOL

Red, I'm still 27 right now, when is your bday? I only have my one bedroom in my parents house, and I refuse to move out because I am never home enough to pay rent anywhere else, ROFL. Plus my mom is fighting cancer (she had 2 surgeries this week, I'm heading out to the hospital to see her in ICU in about an hour), so its nice being home around the family again. I played the grownup from the time I was 18 until I hit 26. My son just turned 9, so I know all about "feeling" old, I think its something that hits you around 26 and you just have to shake it off. Like I said, I'll be 28 in a few months, and I see the light at the end of the tunnel, there is lots of life yet to live, so don't worry, you'll come out of it. And there is NOTHING wrong with being called a Lizard Lady. As for the wedding, well you could do it however you wanted, I didn't care the first time around, and I probably wouldn't care the second, but I won't wear tights, that will have to be left up to the rest of the wedding party..

Yes, I'll wear a kilt, nope, not gonna get me in tights.

Jeff

RedQuake Feb 17, 2004 10:52 AM

HEHEHE, the tights thing i'll have to comprimize on i'm sure. My b-day is in November..i'm still at home cause things went very sour when the ex left (when i kicked him out) so i remained with my family, helping to care for my grandmother who passed this past Nov. I've wanted to move out forever but i work only part time right now, rent is very high in my area and no one will allow a small dog and reptiles into an apartment. I was taking care of my brothers full time when i was 11. Both my parents worked...and my brothers ended up calling me mom. I've always felt i had to stay to take care of everyone, but they have grown up and its time for me to move on. I've been applying for full time with no success so i'll have to go to another company, but i will get a good job. As for my previous wedding attempt, we were going to get married at Medieval Times the dinner and show place. Thats why the tights. It was an amazing setup. The challenge was having everyone come dressed in that period clothing LOL, my aunts aren't into that. My geckos and my artwork are a huge part of my life. I'm not into hanging out at the bars, did that to much when young. I'd rather spend a quiet night watching the leos or painting. I've become a hermit i guess.....gotta change that. I was thinking it would be cool to start a herp group in my area. Theres got to be more people out there that like them than just me right. I'm hoping to have everything set up here so that i can have people over to see my geckos. This particular room will be for them alone within a month or so. I'm moving across the hall.

My fiance does not seem to mind me having my animals (Sugar Gliders and Lizards mostly) but he doesnt like that I put so much time and money into them. He absolutely hates it when I talk about them.
He likes to go to work and pretend he knows everything about snakes and lizards...and that HE owns many himself..but the fact is..he owns NONE, haha..they're all mine.
But anyway, I got into my lizards and snakes and such after we got involved, mainly b/c he had 2 iguanas, and I just fell in love and it started from there, lol.

While I'm just a youngin compared to most of you, just turned 19 in November, I got pretty lucky with my current boyfriend of two years. Not only does he love all my lizards, he has a leo of his own! For Valentines day? We bought each other a leo. Hah! He got a blizzard baby and I got a gorgeous adult female, the one I've been posting pictures of lately. She's a doll. I do get made fun of at work sometimes, they tell me I'm going to grow up and be the "Crazy Gecko Lady" But that's just beause whenever we get a cute one in, I buy it (working at a petstore is nice sometimes) I had no idea that my boyfriend would be into reptiles, when I told him I had iguanas as a kid he thought it was cute but he didn't want those because they get so big. But when I bought my first leo over the summer, he had one about 8 days later. It's great! And now that I'm up to 4 tanks in my bedroom, he still thinks it's cute. He even helped me name the first 2 leos. The next 4 were up to me! Now if I could only get him into anime...well one obsession is better than none!

I'm only 20 myself...Most of the guys I know couldn't care less one way or the other about my leos. Now I just need to get one of them to go out with me...lol My friend dan thinks that they're kinda cute...but he's not a big fan...he's a cat person...lol It amazes me how many people are afraid of reptiles...I don't know how you could be afraid of leos...they're just plain cute! I love snakes as well...I used to catch them constantly...and I still would if I saw any around! Problems with snakes is most of the people I know HATE them. My mom would kill me if I brought one home...and I think my roommates would kick me out of the apartment...lol What I wouldn't give for someone who loves all animals... I really am mostly a horse person...then dogs...then cats...then the reptiles probably...I really just love all animals...its really hard to find other people that do! I think turtles are the easiest ones to get other people to like...I had a baby RES for awhile that EVERYONE who met him loved! Sadly he died on Christmas day I got the leos after him...and now I'm addicted! One of my goals for the end of the school year is to get my roommates into the leos...lol

Man that sounds alot like me.....hehe. When i was at university i had bought my dog Chip. He was only a puppy then and i would bring him to school with me cause he was so small i could put him in my pocket. Plus i worked on the campus mdical team so he would stay with me on night shifts in the office. Every day i had people coming to see me and puppy-sitting offers all the time. I highly doubt people would have been so willing to help out had i had a lizard at the time LOL. I've got a soft spot for my geckos....i do love my dog and want to get a cat soon too but lizards are special. I used to horse back ride too, would love to have an Arabian stallion. But if i only have dogs cats and reptiles i'll be happy no matter what

Well I've only got my dog and my geckos...it wouldn't be bad except that I have to have 4 different things for the geckos because I have to quarantine them!

Someone else said it first but i'll repeat - if there is friction with your reptiles at first (or anything else major) it is better to find out earlier than later. I am a 25 year old male and have never had a problem with the women at all. I am currently committed and my girlfriend had never seen them before. Now i am showing her how to hold them and she will feed them for me when she spends the night. With me it only takes one major incompatibility and its "thanks for the memories." Life is not long enough to make MAJOR comprimises. Yes I know relationships require compromise, but not sacrafice. That is one of the reasons divorce is so high (in my opinion). Our culture seems it acceptable for a partners to have to make GREAT sacrafices for love and relationships. I found with patience and knowing when to move on that is a load of s&%$. Just keep on being you - you'll find someone who loves you for your herp loving self Hope this helps.

WEll i guess its my turn to share. I'm only 20 been married for a year and together for about three(high school sweetheart)lol. We actually met at a petsmart. We both worked there. I worked at a local pet store first. She didn't like me at first because i would tell the animal manager that she was doing things wrong with the animals.(how i got fired). Anyways when i first got into reptiles she didnt like them at all. Then one day she saw her first reptile. A bearded dragon. We now do reptiles together. In fact i'll order a new reptile and when it shows up she decides its hers. We do beardies, leos and green tree pythons. Its so awesome collecting and breeding reptiles together. It helps keep our relationship healthy. Theres my bit. Hope you guys enjoy. Btw what a great topic.>>>BRYAN

...but I'm in class and don't have time to read everything...this is a looong thread

Anyway, don't worry, there are girls who like herps...I mean, look how many of us there are on this board! Anyway, just a little encouragement for you. Not all girls think reptiles are slimy, icky, and/or gross. You'll find one
