Breeding wild caught ETB

mpwrmodena Feb 17, 2004 12:05 PM

Hey im new the forums and plan on breeding ETB's. After getting the animals and making sure they are fine for around 1 month is it difficult to get them to breed. I have a very large encloser for them 4'x3'x6'. Most people say the average import is over 5 years old. So I figure if they are the right size and ready for breeding is it Actualy hard to get them to do so. I like to house my species together but in Large enclosers. The max I would keep in this encloser is 3 ETB but what sex ratio should I have 2 males 1 female or 2 females and one male? Does anyone have links on a DIY building of a ETB encloser?

Just my opinion!
You need to establish the adults for a lot longer than 1 month unless you intend to keep all the offspring and not offer them for sale. Most fresh imports are parasite heavy and need to be checked. If they have positive fecals you need to wait until all treatment effects are gone and they test negetive. Personally, I wait at least 2 years until they are considered LTC before attempting to breed them. Keep them separate until you are ready to breed. This allows you to keep accurate records and be sure who has done what and who has what.

When ready to breed, I always try 1 male at a time. That way I can keep track of bloodlines. Also you can then add the preface CBB to the offspring and show your customers the actual Dam and sire. A good reputation is only gained through accurate record keeping and accurate representaion of the offspring!

Well, all i can say is you need at least 2'x2'x2' min.. Any thing larger is good but not two large you want them to find each other. NEVER NEVER NEVER put two males in the same cage, let alone in breeding season or they will begin ritual combat for the female, All i can say is ouch for you. Introduce several males, they will scent and make the other males get " in the mood".
I cant say enought about the quality animals the craig produces, but if you do not have a proven breeder, multiple males is the only way to bump up the percentage of good healthy young. If one cant preform than hopefully the other will. Also breeding dosent = babies, Luck=babies.
Lastly Never breed a 1 month import female, she is most likely chalked full of parasites, and i am sure here body weight is not up to par for a healthy clutch, that can cause serious problems after the animal has delivered its young, even death.

Welcome to the wonderful world of patiences, i mean emeralds
