Want to start a breeding colony and have a few questions

LoneGreyWolf20 Feb 17, 2004 12:32 PM

As the topic states I would like to start a breeding colony of Leopard Geckos. I currently have 1 male that is approximately 6 years old. Will he be to old to breed? He is high yellow as far as I can tell. If I was to get say tangs, or jungles or any other type of morph will I get all high yellows or will I get a mix of things? I have been trying to read up on genetics of Leos, but figured I would ask anyways. My male is in a 46 gallon Bow front aquarium, I am using calci-sand as a substrate as that is what he has been on since I aquired him almost 5 years ago. After reading some of the posts I am considering changing to some sort of linoleum flooring instead. I use a UTH for his heat. With this size enclosure how many females can I put in with him? Do you keep them in there year round or are you supposed to seperate them and then introduce them when you want them to breed? That is all the questions I can come up with at this time, but I may come up with more later. ;0

Hello,

Hi-yellow to tang would produce some hi-yellows and some tangs. Same with jungle.

Switching from calci-sand to a different substrate is a very good choice! I assume that your UTH is at about 88-92 degrees? The rest of the tank should be 70-80 degrees.

I'm not sure how many females could go in your size tank...probably at least 3. Some breeders keep their females with the male continually and others just leave them together for a couple weeks and then remove the male. It is less stressful for the females if they aren't with the male 24/7...

Be sure to read up extensively on breeding in general. You need to be prepared to incubate the eggs, care for all the hatchlings, care for the gravid females, etc.

Enjoy your geckos,

Forgot to mention... Hi-yellow and tangerine are fairly common morphs... You might want to keep that in mind for once you are ready to sell the hatchlings. They won't sell as quickly or for as much $$ as the fancier morphs. Just a thought.

Thank you for your reply! I am not looking to make a lot of money on my breeding... I am more interested in what is in my opinion just keeping the awesome blood line of my High-Yellow going and maybe just get some interesting usual morphs. I am not looking to breed animals that will sell for $500-$800 from other breeders... I am looking more for the $35-$75 range. I want to stay small, but make a name for myself with usual morphs.
