fruit flies info

djxmasterchief Feb 17, 2004 04:07 PM

hi, i just had some baby veileds hatch and i was wondering if i could use the fruit flies that i caught from the outside to feed my baby chameleons. So im worried that in doing so, the flies might have something that might get the chameleons sick, so is this ok or not? Lele if your there, any info might be great from you. thx

as with any wild caught insect, you have to be careful where you collect them since you never know what they got into. I would suggest you spend $30.00 and buy the fruit fly breeding kit that bigappleherp.com has that comes ready to produce 1000's of fruit flies (your choice of hydei or melanogaster) over and over. I bought one a year ago and only recently had to buy more medium from carolina.com to start up my production for my new babies.

With wild caught flies, you get flying flies all over your house and they keep reproducing and are hard to get rid of..with the flightless ones, they dont fly around and usually stay in the cage for the babies to use.

Just my opinion based on personal experience. Dont take the risk with babies. They are very fragile

Hi, sorry haven't been around too much. Raf gave you good advice. The biggest concern would be chemicals. FF don't live very long so it is easy to turn over a new batch, but then you will always have flyers.

Raf suggested one site for a kit; I got a kit from Timberline that worked out well when I had little critters to feed them to. It's MUCH cheaper and VERY easy. They were great to deal with, too. I found the Hydei to be more "durable." They take a bit longer to reproduce but if you plan right youcan always have some on hand
