Pacman...just wanna make sure i've got it right

gutloader Feb 17, 2004 04:43 PM

I just purchased a small horn frog (he could fit in a tablespoon)...he's in a well planted 45 gallon hex tank...substrate is "jungle mix" soil..there are a a few small overturned flower pots for hiding spots as well as some cork bark....temp is around 80 during the day and 70 at night...a water dish is also supplied....i mist the cage twice a day.

i plan on making lobster roaches his staple diet because i have so many now (friggin things), also will give him crickets and whatever silkworms i can spare.

i've had him one day and i've seen him take down some roaches already ....so far so good

Any advice is appreciated

Sounds like the set-up is good. the diet is good, make sure you dust the insects. Also, stay away from mice because they are too fatty.

Sounds good. Might want to get a hygrometer to measure the humidity. Misting twice a day sounds a little high, though with different set ups it might be fine. Humidity should be around 50-60%, which is sufficient. Any more and all it can do is encourage bacteria and culture mold or fungi (though you might not see any change, I guarentee there is a decrease in the aforementioned problems with the decrease in humidity). The roaches will make a great staple, and your plans sound great. Just make sure not to over feed, and you should be fine. Enjoy your new frog.

i have a humidity indicator in there...i mist the cage at 530am..by the time i get home at 4pm the humidity drops under 50%...i suppose i could cover part of the screen to help hold it in...i'll keep an eye on it.

as far as feeding him...i read to feed him several insects every 3rd day, is that correct???...i have no reason to give him mice with all the bugs i have so avoiding them will be no problem

That should be a general guide. You have to alter the guide to fit your specific frog. If the frog starts to look pudgey after a while on that feeding regiment, cut back. If it looks too lean, then feed more. It is best though, for the frog to be a bit skinnier than a bit obese. It will help in the long term health. Good luck. Andy
