UPDATE: vet say's everything was fine except...(more)

abstractcypher Feb 17, 2004 05:01 PM

He said everything was fine except they saw a very small amount of Coccidia. He recommended bringing them in for treatment, but if I recall correctly don't beardies usually always have a trace of Coccidia? Isn't that normal?
The reason i'm hesitant to react is their always wanting to see the animals (and this goes back to my snakes, ferret and rats)which costs money just for that, instead of listening to what I observe first hand with the animals. I belive myself to be educated enough about my animals to know that their not going to notice anything externally that I wouldn't already have noticed. And i'm not one to throw my money away. Nor am i one to let my animals suffer in the slightest because of finicial matters.
What do you recommend?
Also, if any of you are from Chicago and can recommend a reputable herp vet that would be AWESOME.

Thanks again,

RayRay

I have yet to use his services, but Dr. Byron de la Naverre, D.V.M. at the Animal House of Chicago has come highly recommended to me by two different people whom I trust.

wnat to just aid the dragon in cleaning really well and get a recheck in a few weeks, we have found that the normally deal with it themselves and at different times will have counts slightly up or down.

This is my opinion, if the dragon is not showing any signs of illness or stree, eating well and growing, leave him be and let his system deal with it, this is how they develope their immune system.

Its a different story if you are seeing signs of problems. Then I do not hestitate to treat either through the cleaning process or meds if the dragon health is compromised.

Its a personal decision you have to make.

For those that get bent out of shape over me or others telling people our experiences with a species that most clinics know little about.... sorry, what we relate is our experience and we advise the owners to decide for themselves, but for it to be an informed decision with all the information and facts.

Treatment often creates worse problems if it really was not needed for the dragons health.

You shouldn't even have to worry about making a statement about that Cheri. Sorry but I think it's just sad you even have to have that thought on your mind when you post advice.

I would approve of the format you used to convey your opinion.

But that is my opinion!!!

It is my opinion that someone who feels the need to give Cheri a hard time for the way she gives her advice might want to consider focusing more of their energy on actually learning from her.

I can understand your point about some people giving the advice they give. What I don't understand is how Cheri's history of advice and success has not gained enough of your respect for you to keep the opinions you have expressed to yourself. Have you looked at her history and the contributions she has made to the husbandry and care of bearded dragons? Have you done the necessary research about her knowledge of these animals to form a justifiable opinion about her?

Do you think that maybe, just maybe she knows what is fact and what is not fact about these animals? When you give advice on the care or husbandry of animals to you state it in a way that it is clearly only your opinion or do you make statements as though they are fact? Or do you just pop in, make comments about the way other people give advice, then pop out?

Thanks Cheri. That's what I thought. He said there was only a minute presence of it. They always want to either bring them in or do some kind of procedure. More dinero.

If you start seeing any signs of illness I'll explore other options. But I have a strong feeling their in this for more than fixing up some animals.

I'm going to check out that other vet on State St. Thanks a bunch guys.

If you are close to downtown, I would highly recommend Dr. JB Bruedele at Burnam Park Animal Hospital, my vet. Dr. B's got a few Breaded Dragons, a Ball Python, Corn Snake, and another python, i cannot recall. He's also a member of the Chicago Herp Society, not to mention he's a really nice guy!
