Taking a trip to Las Vegas, northwestern AZ and neighboring California

trisnake Feb 17, 2004 05:12 PM

I will be in Las Vegas from March 13th through March 20th and hope to be able to do a few herping trips during the day while I am there, weather permitting. Since the temps have a tendency to get up to the high 70's and possibly low 80's during that time of March, can anyone tell me the probability of seeing any herps during the day. I will settle for seeing anything but would really like to see snakes. Also, since I will be making my day trips from L.V. can anyone tell me where I may want to be looking that would be less than 2 hours driving time from there?

I appreciate anyones input.

Chris

I live in Arizona and I can tell you that day time temps need to be in the 90 degree range before snakes come out. Night time temps are still to cold here. We are having a couple 80 degree days this week but it's suppose to cool back down. You may not see snakes around here till April . I saw one rattlesnake when out hiking the Superstition Mountains (east of the Phoenix metro area) years ago and it was around April when we saw it. Good luck anyway!

I live in Los Angeles California, and like Arizona it's still cold here around march. We might have a few 80 degree days but the nights are still cool. You could get lucky though. I have a snake rescue business where we remove snakes from the property of houses in Malibu and surrounding areas (mostly Hellori AKA Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes, and Cal Kings) before they get head chopped by the shovel. We have started recieving snake calls again, and it's mostly snakes just catching a peek of the sun near their dens. You might get to experience one of these sightings and get your wish. Also the lizards are out now too, so maybe this is a foreshadowing of things to come.
If you can, change your trip to mid April. You'll see alot more.
Have a nice trip.
Jason

Thanks for your reply. I am taking a class in Las Vegas and that is why I am going there. I usually take my herping trips in late spring or early summer. The years that I go to Tucson and southern AZ I usually go in early to mid August when the rainy season starts. I am hoping I get to see a few things while I am in Vegas. I am getting different information from different people who have been out there during the same time I will be and find that it may just be a matter of what each days temps are. I guess I will know when that week is over.

Chris,

You may want to check out the "Herping Las Vegas" section of my website, where I have photos and captions from the past two years (I was there in March and April).
