2 Things:
1: Did your gecko recently shed, or is it about to?
2: Does it spend time on the bottom of the tank in a dirt substrate?

yes, he did just shed, but i took extra care to make sure this was a good, clean shed because i was having trouble with the skin near his ear. he does spend time on the ground, which is coconut fiber, now that he doesn't stick, but he didn't before.
