Quick update on Maya - need info also...

veronicag Feb 17, 2004 05:59 PM

The vet just called and said there were two types of bacteria present in Maya's culture. Staphylococcus and Entrococcus (spelling?). He doesn't know for sure if those are normal bacteria for Uro's or not. He's doing some research and I'm doing my own. Does anyone have any info on these bacterias? He thought that both of those should be sensitive to Baytril, but she was on Baytril for 3 weeks with no improvement. I'm so confused! I was hoping and praying that these culture results would help, not make things worse.

Veronica,

I'm sorry to hear of Maya's predicament. Staphylococcus and Enterococcus are common enough as far as bacteria are concerned but the problem is identifying which type they are. Both are opportunistic pathogens that can be spread through breaks in mucosal and skin integrity. The fact that they are common makes them harder to treat because they develope resistances to antibiotic treatments. The strains that Maya has may require the use of two different medications. Your Vet should be able to determine which ones to use with reptiles.

Please post about the Vets prognosis and what meds are being used. Baytril is a good broad based antibiotic but more specific remedies might be called for with these conditions.

You might read this document to gain some more insight on studies and what meds work with different reptiles:

My female is on baytril for a mouth infection and respitory infectoin. The mouth is coming along nicely but now she is starting to show signs of respitory again. She went 1 week with the meds where she seemed totally fine, but now she is shooting the clear liquid out of her nose again. Do you think the stuff she is shooting out of her nose is respitory infection again, or do you think she has excess water and she is shooting it out. Is it possible the bacteria are now imune (sp) to the Bayril? Also, i only have 2 shots left, can i go back to the vet and just pick up some more Baytril, or do i have to have them run all the tests all over again. The Baytril seems to be working because right after i gave Chubs her shot today she became active, and it seems she stopped shooting the stuff out of her nose and her breathing seems better. Also, what other types of medicine should i ask my vet about, if Baytril isn't working. I know you cant diagnos (sp) my uro without seeing it and running tests. people talk about a dark thick liquid coming out of their uros nose's, but my uro has a water like liquid coming out of its nose, it basically seems just like water maybe with a little milky white in it. What is this?

As I said in a previous post I'm no doctor just a Vet tech student who happens to be studying Bacteria right now.

However, would gladly refer you to the links I posted earlier this week they may provide you with some insight on illnesses and terminology. The longer a particular antibiotic med is used the greater the likelyhood of the animal developing a resistance to the med. Melissa Kaplan talks about treating such resistances on her webpage but only your Vet knows your animal and you might get the best results by consulting with him/her. Don't wait too long because infections can spread.

Your doctor may need to add another antibiotic to the "Mix", so to speak, to get the full spectrum of bacteria present. Did your vet do a tracheal wash or swab to do a culture and sensitivity? or did they just try Baytril empirically? If your uro is still having discharge from her nares, but seems to respond to the Baytril it may be helping but not totally clearing the infection. I would recommend a recheck visit to the vet immeadiately. You do not want to fool around with this. As we learned from Maya these infections can be complicated and get terminal very quickly.
