spread of parasites?

jay111 Feb 17, 2004 06:13 PM

Can internal parasites be transferred from one atb to another in a common-housing situation? im suspicious that one of mine (zeus) might have sumthin cuz he has puked 6 of seven feed attempts over a two-month period. my other one (apollo) eats like a swine and has no other issues. i just dont want to put apollo at risk. Im pretty meticulous about cleaning, so contact with feces is minimal at best, if that even matters. any help would be cool....thanks.

If it is puking get it as far away from you collection as possible!!!!!!!!!!!! Puking has 2 theories, 1 is just two large of food intake leads to destroyed stomachs, and second is an problem that is viral that can wipe out a collection in a matter of weeks. Dont know much about puking, just know that i put 400-1000 dollar emeralds i the ice box to save my collection. It is not worth watching an animal suffer and die because you wish to save a few bucks.
all i can say is get rid of the puker, no matter what anyone says onece the stomach cells are destroyed, and you get gas build up, they will puke reguardless.

wow, i never knew their stomachs could be destroyed like that......they have been together for awhile now and apollo has shown no ill effects whatsoever. Maybe b4 i go and freeze him ill try to separate, and maybe try giving him a real small food item. He has regurged twice, maybe 3 times tops, do you think the damage is already done, or will i be wasting my time. I should also mention that the ill snake zeus spends alot more time soaking lately, and he's seemingly reluctant to stretch his body out, remaing coiled up even when i remove him for cleaning he doesnt really uncoil much except for his head a bit so he can try to bite me.

Jay,
Have you actually had a fecal done? Without knowing for sure weather or not you are dealing with something caused by parasitic load or something possibly more threatening to the animal and it's cage mate is just like playing Russian Roulett. I strongly advise, as Joe has already, to separate the two and put the one showing symptoms in to quarintine. You have to first determine the cause before you can take action treatment wise.

i have not done a fecal, i was basically going on the idea that most symptoms point to that. Ive been to 4 vets in my area and none have been willing to examine him. I have about 4 years in vet training and can do a fecal on my own, thats simple enough if u know what your looking for. I isolated him anyway, and based on my experience and observations im gonna give him a panacure-douche and see how that helps. i think in after that its gonna be fuzzys, no adult mice. im going to line up a microscope so i can do a fecal to be sure b4 i treat him.
