Update on Respitory infection

Mike3 Feb 17, 2004 08:31 PM

Chubs, my female ornate had respitory infection. She is still on medication, but she seems 100% better. The bad part is, the first doctor, hurt her gums/front mouth when she tried to get her mouth open, so she now has to be treated for that. The first doctor, told me all the wrong things and would say stuff that really scared me like, "is that a chuckwalla"? And she said, "Are u sure this is a female i think it is a male because it looks colorful" Plus she told me to inject the shots into the back legs. When i went there because of the the mouth infection i ask for a different doctor. He properly opened her mouth, actually knew what type of uromastyx it was and confirmed it was a female. He told me that you should give shots in the front legs because it circulates throughout the hole body before the medicine goes through the kidneys and losses its strength. the other doctor told me i only need two shots, he told me i needed about 2-3 weeks worth of shots to properly get rid of this case of respitroy infection. So the first doctor i got was just a dumb ***. The second one i got was very knowledgeable and just a better doctor over all. The good news is that even with the horrible looking mouth infection she is still eating and is keeping her body weight. It looks like it is starting to clear up. The bad news is the uro with a tumor or growth is starting to go down fast. I am going to take her this week to get euthinized because i tried to force feed her, but the i think the growth or tumor is in the instestinces and wont let any food go down because she will throw-up the food after a while. The doctor said it is probably a tumor/growth or impaction, but he thinks that is is most likely a tumor. And if it is an impaction she probably wouldn't survive the 400 dollar surgery, so the doctor said it isn't worth it. It is sad, but i think i will euthinize it because that is the most sensible thing to do in this case. Also, we thought the baby had it, because it started to lose weight, but after i put him in the second quarantine cage which is bigger than the one i gave him, he ate all of his food, gained weight, more alert, and has better coloration. Hopefully in a week this will all be over and everything will be back to normal.

Hello Mike. I've got two uros with pneumonia/respiratory infections. I have some questions for you because we are still trying to help these uros.

1. What meds were prescribed and what was the dose and frequency?

2. How was it determined that Chubs had a resp. inf.? Were any tests run by the vet? What symptoms did she have?

3.

All of this info could help us and our vet figure out our sick uros. He tried hard to get a good culture on Maya but he had to go into the trachea to get a culture and wasn't very successful. Maya was thrashing around and wouldn't let us get a good swab. Unfortunately the test results only came back with normal mouth bacteria. Nothing that would cause an infection like she has.

Also, I'm really sorry to hear about the uro you are thinking about putting to sleep. If it's an impaction those are fairly easy to clear up with a hot enema. A tumor is another story though. Have you tried a hot enema? I can take you through the steps is you want to try. When Houdini had an impaction (a week ago) it felt like he had a kidney bean in the lower righ abdomen. Three enemas cleared it up and he was pooping normally in two days. Why does the vet think it's a tumor? An impaction will quickly take the life of a uro. So at this point an emema really couldn't hurt. Let me know if I can help.

1 She is on Bayril, has 4-5 units every other day for 3 weeks.
2 She would shoot mucus or something like that out of her nose frequently, lose of apitite, and the vet did get her mouth open and took her in back to do the tests.
I tried many enemas at home before the vet. When i took her to the vet they said that it is a very abnormal hard mass, and was way too high in her body for a water enema to be effective. They doubt it is impaction but it is a possibility. So i already tried numorous times and it didn't work so they said surgery would be the only way, and if it is a growth, or tumors which it most likely is she wont have a chance. So they recomended that i put her to sleep.

PS
My gravid female gained 18 grams in less than 2 weeks, and is getting huge. My little male or female is also starting to get huge around its abdomen so it could be a female but i doubt it. So everything is going good, so the only problem i am having is with the female with the tumor. After this i dont think i will get anyone for now because everyone is fat and healthy so i dont want to mess that up.
