what a thrill when kids visit!!billy

Thanks, mate, that's about the dumbest thing I've seen anybody brag about on this forum in a long time.
Over such good pictures, obviously Billy knows whats safe for his family, and he knows those animals alot better than you do, after all he cares for them.
Dont even respond to this, I know your original intentions were only to cause conflict and argue with others, so pitiful. At least you could have been positive to this post or tried to help someone whos asking for help.
Great pics Billy, keep them coming, Ive always enjoyed your pictures.
Same to you, spud. Next time some kid gets ripped up and large monitors are banned, I hope it's in your town, not mine.
How many kids have you actually read about that have been torn up by large monitors? I've never read about one and I try to keep up to date on my reptile related news. You hear every day about some kid being mauled by a dog.. yet no one thinks twice of letting their 5 year old son play with the family pet who could tear his face off in one bite given the inclination. I understand monitors are a wild animal.. but for someone who KNOWS their individual animals the risk isn't that much greater than someone bringing a strange kid into the house with the family dog. How can younger kids learn to respect and handle these animals properly later in life without being exposed to them? Reading doesn't teach you everything. Eventually you need hands on stuff and none of those pictures showed anyone in danger of being attacked by those monitors. These kids are the next generation of our hobby. They're the ones who are going to keep what we enjoy so much alive. Its up to us to guide them properly. Its everyone's pet peeve that people buy an animal before researching and learning about it. Well teach then.. or allow others to teach where you won't because you fear that someone's going to get hurt.

aaaaaaaa
it was about having a child look, touch or even feed a monitor.
It was more about a child being right next to a large monitor, with inapproprate tongs, food (which changes how monitors act), no experienced keeper (or even adult) in any position to act if things went wrong, the monitor being so close to his head, etc. It's about common sense.
I wouldn't feed any of my monitors like that, and they are much smaller. It is only a matter of time before something goes wrong, kind of like feeding a monitor by hand.

First off, what the heck are we talking about? That big mean monitor? Whats it going to do anyway. Squish a finger? put an eye out? Yea, it sure could do that. But is it deadly? heck no.
Come on now, why can't we be free to squish a finger? If the fool kid is dumb enough to get in that position, that a good wacking is in order.
I mean, what other things do we as people do that risk an eye or a finger??? What? most everything. Crossing the dang street is far more dangerous.
It seems Rope and his family and friends, like to test their neuvos with reptiles. At least this time is was not the croc monitor. If you remember, last time it was, and he soon learned what a bite was like.
Hey, I also put my eye out falling off my mountain bike. Dang better get rid of it. And Oh DK, no running on the streets of Sydney, a person could get wacked by a puff. Cheers FR

Lucien,
Just curious, but did you read the newspaper article a couple years back about Sharon Stone’s (now Ex-) husband getting part of his foot torn off at the LA Zoo by a five foot monitor? True it was a Komodo, but it was a relatively small one that did a whole lot of damage in a very short period of time that required several surgeries to repair. That would be one heck of a lesson for some young kid to learn the hard way. And there is a huge difference between a domestic dog who has been bred in captivity for hundreds of generations and a monitor lizard that at best has been in captivity for four generations with no selective breeding for disposition. Further, there are probably 50 dogs in people’s homes for every one monitor, so let’s not try and compare apples to oranges shall we?
I’m not advocating that we crucify the kid, but lets not perpetuate irresponsible pet ownership either!
Just the opinion of one herper with over 35 years experience working with herps and a few scars to prove I’m not always the brightest or as cautious as I should be, but none of my kids have any scars from my critters! And I’m willing to bet that Dr. Sweet’s kids don’t have any scars either.
