Bindi, my BTS, has a dry scale problem this winter.....

LoveToFoxtrot Feb 17, 2004 10:01 PM

How can I help her scales to stay hydrated? I am going to give her a moist moss box again tomorrow, as I have been removing it between sheds because she usually likes to spread the moss everywhere in her enclosure. I have had her for almost two years now, and she seems to be in otherwise perfect health. She is kept on crushed walnut shells, and has been since she was little with no problems yet(knock on wood!) because she seems to find other substrates irritating. She always has a large water dish in her tank. I have been taking her out of her tank every day for the last week and wrapping her in damp towels to temporarily help the dryness, and she enjoys it, but I would like to know if there is anything else that I could put on the scales or in her tank to help her.
The really dry scales are only noticable on her underside from just behind the front legs to the tip of her tail. They feel very rough to the touch and the edges are curled up and slightly brown. She seems to shed them with no trouble. She has shown these symptoms before, and they usually go away in time, but the problem seems a slightly more severe this time. They only visibly annoy her when she tries to back up, because they catch on the ground. I hope that it is simply a humidity issue and nothing more serious, so if anyone has any tips or advice, I would certainly appreciate them. Thank you!

Aubrey

Large enough for her to get her whole body in? My skink is on Care Fresh bedding and I live in California (very dry!) and the large water bowl seems to keep the humidity up enough for her skin to stay healthy and she has perfect sheds. I don't know if this helps, but it is what I do.

Also, if you only have her exposed to the moist towels for a few minutes it could actually make her skin more dry than it was. I think for something like that to do any good she needs to be exposed for a minimum of 15 minutes. I don't know about skinks but it's that way with snakes. Scales are scales right? Well, maybe not but it's theory !
