All this talking about morphs what do you all think about sunset boas I havent been hearing anything about them here. If you dont know you can see them at D&Mbreeders.com Does anyone have any plans to get some of these?

Sunset boas are a Hogg Island-Hypo cross.
Opposing views on this topic are sure to be represented shortly. Many feel that since the Hogg Isle is nearly or may already be extinct, that crossing it to create a new morph is unethical.
Stirring the pot????

Are you 100% sure of that statement?

Im not argueing with you about is, as I dont know. However I have seen the hogg x hypos that Dave created, and IMHO they look NOTHING like the sunset hypos.

Interested to hear more about this.

Sunsets are the results of babies like Daves crossed together.. so it's like a super hypo/hogg.. not the first generation like Dave and others have produced..
(just to clarify)

I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH DAVE AT EAST TN REPS. I HAVE NEVER TALKED WITH DAVE BEFORE HIM CALLING ME THIS MORNING. THANKS FOR YOUR CALL DAVE. I GREATLY ENJOYED OUR CONVERSATION. THE HYPO/HOGGS, SUNSET, SALMON, SALMON/HYPOS, ARE ALL CROSS BRED BOAS. I'M NOT SURPRISED THAT YOU GUYS LIKE TO ATTACK ME. I SELL, KEEP, BUY, AND TRADE MOSTLY LOCALITY BOAS. THIS IS MY PREFERENCE, THIS IS WHAT MAKES US INDIVIDUALS. I AM NOT GOING WITH THE FLOW. IT IS JUST NOT MY NATURE. IF YOU GUYS DON'T LIKE ME FOR THAT, IT'S FINE, I CAN LIVE WITH THAT. I AM NOT OUT TO IMPRESS OR GAIN ANYTHING FROM YOU ROOKIES. THIS IS MY 24TH YEAR PRODUCING BOAS, THATS WHAT'S IMPORTANT WITH EXPERIENCED BREEDERS AND KEEPERS IN THIS HOBBY. NOT TO KNOCK THE OTHER ANIMALS "I LOVE ALL BOAS AND ALL PEOPLE." I JUST TELL IT LIKE IT IS AND SOME PEOPLE CAN'T STAND THAT AND IT MAKES THEM VERY DEFENSIVE. I RESPECT DAVE AND RICH AND ALL THE OTHERS THAT HAVE PRODUCED BOAS REGARDLESS. WHAT RICH HAS DONE WITH THE SALMON/HYPO IS VERY IMPRESSIVE TO SAY THE LEAST AND I WOULD NEVER SAY OTHERWISE. THANKS FOR YOUR GREAT CONTRIBUTION TO THE HOBBY RICH. DAVE YOUR HYPO/HOGGS WERE ALSO A VERY IMPRESSIVE ADDITION TO THE HOBBY. I WILL REPEAT " I LOVE ALL PEOPLE AND ALL BOAS."

Im not really sure what to think of them. I was lucky enough to see them in person at the Tinley Park show a few months back, and they are very nice hypos. That being said the price is really a bit itimidating, especially for a hypo.

I would venture to say if they have bred that line of hypo a few times, and gotten the same results, they are "special". But Im not sure where to go from there with that, as they are not "special" enough to warrent a new morph IMHO.

I will say I do think they are some of the nicest hypos around, but I would also say this hypo looks very SIMILAR to them. And its not from the "sunset line", but then again being a hypo I would venture they are related somehow.

sunsets are very pretty but i still want just a plain good old hog island. I can't pick sides on the do & don't mix arguement. but I do think some people should keep pure lines going because the hogg itself if something to appreciate IMHO.they are such nice looking snakes. I don't have too many boas right now. more balls than anything but I do plan on getting a hogg island (anyone recommend someone?) & I want one of those isabel boas, those things are sweet too.
well there's my 2 cents.
have a good one.

I breed pure hoggs, however I also have nice hypos, beleive me the temptation to cross them hits me every year, reason being I get about $150 for my hoggs and I see the crosses going for 500 . Maybe next year I will breed my male hogg to a female hypo(I say that every year when I see babies selling for big bucks)I am not against it morally I just like producing the hoggs. OBTW hoggs are really neat snakes in their own right. They are my lowest dollar boas, but I love them. Craig Kade

hey if you have any pics of these pure hoggs i'd love for you to post them!

This is the only pic I could find right now, It was taken right before POS this year, she normaly does not look this "blue" I was really surprised when I saw her like this. After she shed she went back to her more normal coloration. Craig Kade.

bcijoe Feb 18, 2004 01:52 PM

I respect you and suggest you continue your pure lines...
and that is not saying I don't like the crosses either!

I can't wait to see Dave's next litter and others as well!

Those things GLOW IN THE DARK!!! lol

but to stick with the pure Hoggs WHILE passing up the potential extra profit is very big of you. Hats off to you.

I wish we can all afford to work this way, but unfortunately for some of us to keep and raise these wonderfull animals we do need to make a profit.

(this is not to say that you don't, or take a loss.. who would?!)

What I mean is, for instance, I have limited room to work with.. I began obtaining more and more locality specific boas a few years ago until I realized that I have to maximize my profits in regards to my space, or else my hobby can't sustain itself and I wouldn't be able to work with and produce these amazing beasts!

I can see and respect both ways and truly believe both can be done well and in an honest manner.

Keep up the good work!

I agree about them being undervalued, when I said they were the least expensive I meant of the animals I keep. I also reread my post and I did not mean to sound "holier then thou". I actually let my hogg male get frisky with a "pastel" (not Ronne line) after he was done hogging it up. LOL. she did not ovulate right away so I introed my hypo male when he was done with his lady. The hogg ended up being a fluffer for him. I too think the crosses look great, one of my reasons I have not crossed them is because I am kinda busy playing with my line of hypos right now, they are a little different then the regular salmons. Here is a pic of one of the f2 hypos. I do not have any photos of my hoggs in k/s gallery right now, I will try to get one up later.Craig

well i can tell one major difference from other hypos...your's seems to prefer Anheuser Busch to other domestic brands. LOL J/P so dude do you drink busch because you like it or do your snake expenses force you to grab the "not so budweiser"..lol I've been there & had plenty of busch (beer) because of expenses. hey it' better than hurricane or king cobra..lol
looking foward to the hogg pic..

When it comes to beer I am not real picky. That was an empty from the day before. Busch is really not that bad.
