Tokay's eating me out of house and home

Israel2004 Feb 18, 2004 06:55 AM

Feeding my pair of tokays last night. Man can the two of them eat, three dozen crickets later, they were full. So out of the 8 dozen i bought yesterday i now have 3 dozen left. Fed the other 2 dozen to the large mouth bass, white's tree frog, african fat-tail, & bibron.

This zoo i have is going to break the bank with the cricket cost. Have to start the roaches soon.

If you are buying the 8 dozen from a pet store, you might as well buy 1000 3/4" (to allow some time for growth) crickets from a cricket farm and build a 24"X24"x24" screen cage for them. I go through about 5000 crickets a month (1/4" and 3/4". I basically starve myself to feed the geckos, not really, but almost.

My tokay has taken a liking for superworms (but mind you mine is very spoiled and she won't eat unless I handfeed her)-there is a higher percentage of fat but about the same amount of protein as crickets. GIving you tokays superworms means you won't have to feed them as much crickets.

I assume you don't handfeed your tokay. It's possible the crickets are well hidden in the substrate, rocks, etc. My tokay is pretty good plump weight, and she's happy with a few superworms a week--but I know she eats them..or about 6 crickets a week.

When I first got my tokay she had a voracious appetite, but she was starving because the other tokays hogged most of the food. When she got her own place, I guess she became so thankful she got very attached to me and likes to be handfed and doesn't mind handling at all. She's plump but doesn't eat like cracy anymore. She's pretty happy with a cricket a day, and some days will prefer to skip a day here and there. During the winter she eats about a cricket a week. During the summer, 3 to 6 a week. It's not bad at all. (she won't eat at all if I don't handfeed her.)

Wow makes me think of how much money I would have to waste on these bugs when I quit my petshop job....

The crickets don't get a chance to hide.
As soon as they hit the ground the tokays are snatching them up.
I drop them right in right of their hiding spots, tokay hears thud of cricket hitting ground, out pops tokay head, cricket gone.

wow! My tokay won't eat unless I handfeed her. she won't even acknowledge food if I just drop them.

Try the superworms sometimes. They are much more filling having a much higher percentage of fat, but about the same amount of protein. Crickets are *very* low in fat.
