calcium and vit d3 in wd...long post

j0anne Feb 18, 2004 09:03 AM

can i give human calcium supplements to my dragons? i do not want to buy a huge amount like the reptile supplements sold here (they all come in enormous bottles) as the powder starts to smell really strongly after a while, and i don't want to give my dragons something that is not "fresh" anymore.

can i mix the powder with water and drop it on their noses for them to lick off?

and one more thing, i've read that vit d3 is not necessary to be supplemented as they don't use much of dietary d3, just the ones generated by exposure to the sun. mine are exposed to about 6 hours of sunlight each day, although not all of them are direct (ie not direct rays on them, just general sunlight). is that adequate?

anyway, thanks in advance for reading this rather long post....

If the sun is through the window or glass it does nothing for them. It must be direct sunlight or a UVB bulb. I always got my calcium in little jars and never had a problem with it going bad. It's not like calcium ever goes bad, it is made out of rock.

well, the calcium is in a powdered vitamin mix, no phosphorus of course, just high calcium. it began to smell really off one fine day.

the sunlight is of course UNFILTERED. i don't use a glass terrarium, i use a cage with wide bars so that they can sun themselves well. open windows. the windows are tinted, so i can tell if the sun is coming through the glass or not.

so back to my qns...can i or can i not use human supplements? thanks
