calcium buildup on glass...please help

domina Feb 18, 2004 09:25 AM

i have just aquired a 55 gal glass aquarium. I have had many glass tanks in the past that I have just scrubbed off the calcium buildup off of the glass to some success. But this is kind of bad and i want to get it all off without damaging the glass. I don't care how abrasive it may be to animals because i will clean it like 10 times before i put anything in it. I just want it off. It was used for a saltwter setup previously and the owner let half of the water evaporate so you could imagine what it looks like. it's just that I have gotten this great tank for free and it would be a shame to waste it. Any tips / tricks would be kindly appreciated.

thanks,
Andy

using vinegar. We use it to clean the decanter of coffee stains and mineral buildup. It'll have to be rinced very well and allowed to air out before anything goes it in though

I'm also thinking baking soda might work too. Make a little paste with it and scrub. But im not sure about that one.

Hope that helps

I've had success w/ vinegar. I've also heard of using the green flavored kool-aid powder on a rag (straight out of the packet).

What about that CLR Remover that I see on all those infomercials late at night when I can't go to sleep?..Wonder if that would work.

You could also try hydrogen peroxide.

I had Piranha when i was in college and had this same situation. Use a brand new straight razor to get the heavy stuff (be careful NOT to nick or shave the silicone or plastic), and then use either peroxide or vinegar to soften the rest - and then use the razor again. Takes some work and elbow grease, but it can be done. Good luck.
