RES and Painted

geckodude54 Feb 18, 2004 09:42 AM

Can I buy Red Eared Sliders and Painted turtles and put them in the same fish pond? Also does there have to be a spot for basking? And how would they do if I put Koi fish in the pond along with them?

I would stick to one species, just to be on the safe side. I would go for the painteds. They stay smaller and do better in ponds. Yes, you do need a basking spot at all times. Go to www.AustinsTurtlePage.com for caresheets and more detailed info.

Generally painted turtles and RES get along just fine, but personally I have my painteds seperated from my RES. I agree that you should stick with painted turtles, they are much hardier turtles, and do fine on the cooler nights.

Ok,
I had an adult Painted male and an adult RES female in the same 10 gallon tank with each other for 3 years, they were perfectly fine. They had one rock in the tank and they would usually bask on top of each other. They would devour anything that I put in the tank. I'd say that having them in the pond would be ok, they do need something to bask on or something where they could atleast get out of the water. Any fish put in there will most likely get eaten unless they are faster than the turtles.

A 10gal tank? I dont want to sound like an ass but you posted in the Mud/Musk forum and said a pond turtle can live in a 20gal. Thats not correct. And keeping 2 turtles in a 10gal is cruel. Again, I dont want to sound like an ass but maybe you should read up on something before you start giving out false information to someone else.

False info? How is that false? They lived together for quite sometime in a 10 gallon tank, I doubt that they cared. They had enough swimming room, and they would bask on top of each other. They are adults but they weren't big.

What are you saying about pond turtles and a 20 gallon tank?

---Well male or female, an adult pond turtle will fit easily and live easily in a 20 gallon aqarium with about 5 inches of water and a few basking rocks.---

Ok, how is that info false, if that's what you were talking about? Whether it's a male or a female adult pond turtle it will fit easily in a 20 gallon tank. That isn't false.
