My vieled's hanging out on the floor!

JethroTull1969 Feb 18, 2004 10:50 AM

My little dude is new, so im probably acting like an overconcerned new mother, but twice today i walked in to chec on him and he was walking across the floor of his cage, just on his way back up- both times i noticed a new crap on the floor- is he going to ground level to drop a load? I thought they just pooped off a brach and let it fall to the ground. I wasnt aware that he would spend much time on the ground. Hes not falling, is he?

I see our veiled do that a lot, too. I think maybe it's hunting behavior. He tends to do that when he's hungry.

My veiled also did that when he was young and was hungry, make sure his basking light isn't too hot, becusae if it is, he is just staying cool and would be darkly coloured. What is the ambient air temp in the enclosure? It should be about 70F-75F, 80F is getting too hot. Make sure he has enough climbing branches and plants to perch on, and be sure that the enclosure is large enough (how large is it?).

Hes in a 22 gallon vertical reptarium with PLENTY of vines and imitated vetetation- his air temp is correct- thanks for the help.

Is the reptarium a screened enclosure...? (i wasnt too sure) 22 gallons is way to small for an adult, and the animal should be in a screen enclosure minimum 4' tall 2' wide 2' long. For smaller adults, a shorter one is fine (small being 14 or so inches long).

yea its all screen, hes a baby (8 weeks) and its a temporary cage, for the next few months, I have it set up vertically with tons of stuff to climb.

Sounds like you've got it all covered. I would say you should put him in a full-sized enclosure as soon as possible, though. Normally you hsould be putting a 6-8 week old cham in the full-size (4x2x2). If he looks comfortable, don't rush getting him in, but if he scratches at/climbs on the sides of the enclosure a lot then it's time to upgrade.
