temp gun...............raspberries

harberrat Feb 18, 2004 01:46 PM

i just got a ProExotics temp gun. pretty cool gadget. i have a dual digital thermometer in the tank now (cool side/hot side), the readings and the temp gun readings are now different. i'm guessing the temp gun is more accurate (am i right?), so should i remove the digital and stop comparing the temps and stop worrying about the differnces? the digital therm. said appx. 97 degrees but when i put the temp gun near the basking spot it said 157 degrees (wow, way too hot i thought). should i just measure with the temp gun?.................i gave my uro raspberries and he poked at them but did not eat any. aren't uros supposed to LOVE them? thanks for any and all help! laura

The temp gun only registers SURFACE temps, not AMBIENT temps. For ambient temps, you use the thermometer. It is crucial that you use both devices to keep your temps where they should be at all times and adjust the temps if need be. Sounds like you've got a good setup, don't mess with it .

As for raspberries, I think it depends on your uro's personal preferences. You just have to try him/her out on different foods until you learn what he/she likes to eat. I've given Ra blueberries and he likes them (I'd like to give him raspberries but I'd have to fight my fiance for them ). Maybe you could try pumpkin (when it is in season). I've given Ra both the fleshy part and the gooey innard part. He loves the gooey innards plus there's a lot of water in it too.

Hope this helps

the Temp Gun measures SURFACE temperatures, while the digital thermometer measures AMBIENT AIR temperatures. there is a significant difference between the two.

we use both all the time, at the same time. using a min/max digital thermo can help you find the hottest and coolest air temps in the cage, most notably the overnight lows at their coolest point.

the temp gun shoots reflective temperatures, surface temperatures, so you can more accurately measure basking spots, or "hang out" spots whether they be blazing hot or moderately cool.

learn to use both, and understand what they are telling you, and you will really start racking up the comprehension points.

interesting that the basking spot itself can be 150F on the surface, but the air temp right above it can be 95F, isn't it?
